M /self And I or > M IXED-MEDIA EXHIBIT EXPLORES IDENTITY VIA PORTRAITS OF CURATOR It’s been said that every work of art is, in fact, a self-portrait of the artist. What, then, to make of a work commissioned as a portrait of another artist? What then, still, when an entire show is comprised of portraits of the same artist? That’s the premise of Spread Ego, an audacious—if intentionally self- indulgent—conceptual undertaking curated by artist (and Just Out con tributor) TJ Norris in the 10,000- square-foot space in Pioneer Place formerly known as Pottery Barn. More than 30 local artists created their own takes on Norris through "S erene P o kerface" by G w e n n a variety of media, from fused glass S e e m e l (2 0 1 0 , a c ry lic on ca n va s, to acrylic on canvas to sound and 4 8 -b y -3 4 inches), o n e o f m o re video projections. th a n 30 pieces in Spread Ego. The result is a provocative, curi ously personal installation marked by its individual parts’ similarities as much as their differences. Larry Cwik focuses on “TJ’s Eyes” (Lau rie Danial does as well, “from Memory”), Jason Berlin envisions “TJ Norris as Faun.” Some works are bare bones—in medium (Brent Marr’s “Untitled (TJ)” pencil on paper, Sarah Gottesdiener’s use of ink for “Free Wood”) and imagery (the skeletal form in Gabriel Lis ton’s “Two Identical Messages A Sly Thief Steals the Canoe”). In a world in which we daily stare down reflections of our selves—be it the morning routine in front of the mirror or the fleet- ing glimpse back from a Max train window or even a darkened cell phone screen—Spread Ego con fronts issues apart from just cre ation and the artist’s(s’) ego(s). Norris—and his collection of por traiture—forces the viewer to con sider how others view us, and how they’d paint, print or otherwise de pict us to the external eye. Somehow, it’s the self removed, yet perhaps never closer.
