But for all the theatrical innovation and daring demonstrated by fest folk, the Bard is still the axis on which the season turns. It was for this reason that artistic director Bill Rauch opted to steer the event full circle and stage one of the first Shakespearean plays that Bowmer brought to Ashland: Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night: Or, What You Will, like many of Shakespeare’s comedies, centers around mistaken identity. Viola, a shipwrecked castaway, disguises herself as a man and finds work as a duke’s servant; she quickly enters a laughably absurd love triangle of girls who like girls dressed like boys who like boys who like girls. I t’s chaotic, uproarious and funny as hell— precisely why Twelfth Night remains one of the Bard’s most well-loved and oft- featuring Bolivia Carmichaels, Ginger and Honey Bea Hart.
