Just when you got the Madonna ver sion of “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina” dislodged from your noggin, Tigard’s Broadway Rose Theatre Company pres ents a fresh take on the Andrew Lloyd Webber powerhouse Evita. Running through August 16, this ambitious pro duction stars Susannah Mars, a veteran of Portland’s Artists Repertory Theatre, as the ruthlessly charming Eva Peron. Director Abe Reybold’s spin on the classic play re-envisions Peron’s climb to the top of Argentinian politics—setting it in a dark and moody tango bar, where dancers heighten the passion and intrigue of the performance. However, Reybold credits the original director, Hal Prince, for creating the kind of iconic staging that changed the game of theater arts. “The score [of Evita] pushed the boundaries of what opera and musical theater are, and required a new way of singing—especially for its female lead,” asserts Reybold. “Prince found Evita herself to be relevant to contemporary politics, where glamour can mask bad deeds. He wanted audiences to examine what they worship, and to be as managed and manipulated by the show as we are by the media.” The production is anticipated to sell out, so get tickets early. Don’t get hot under the collar, sisters—get out of town, and experience up some great music when legendary musician and author Janis Ian performs Friday, August 14 at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington. Ian penned her first hit single, “Society’s Child (Baby I’ve Been Thinking)” at age 13. Tackling the issue of interracial romance in the early sixties, the song established Ian as a controversial and challenging pop voice. Her biggest international smash to date, 1975’s teen angst anthem “At Seventeen,” won Ian her first Grammy award. Ian came out as a lesbian in 1993, after her popularity in the gay community had long been established—Cher, Bette Midler, and Roberta Flack had hits covering Ian songs including “Stars” and “Some People’s Lives.” She is a regular columnist for The Ad vocate and has published numerous science fiction stories and a best-selling autobiogra phy. Her most recent album is 2006’s criti cally acclaimed Folk is the New Black. The Skamania Lodge show is proud to host Ian’s only Portland-area show.
