Starky’s, a gay-ownt-d fine dining restaurant and video bar lounge on Southeast Stark Street, will host its second annual Antique Car Cruise In on Aug. 25. Organizer Henry Humm describes the event as “basically just a little car show with a heavy gay influence.” The aim of the show is to drum up enough interest to start a gay antique car club. Humm says last year’s car cruise showcased a dozen cars, which has already been doubled for this year’s show. (It’s not too late to participate: If you have a to-die-for antique car you’d like to exhibit, sign up ahead of time by contacting him at henryhumm2007@yahoo.com.) Humm says that, although the event was started for fun, he’d like it to grow to the point that it could be used to raise money for charitable causes associ ated with the gay community in Portland. As for his love of cars, he says, "My dad was a Cadillac and Oldsmobile dealer back in the Midwest, and he gave me a 1936 International Pickup that I still have back there.” Among the gems secured for this year’s show are a 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia convertible, a 1950 MG Roadster, a 1969 Lincoln Continental Mark III, a 1930 Ford Model A and a 1954 Nash Metropolitan, of which, according to Humm, “only 1,000 were made.” Also on display will be a 1960 Chrysler 300 two-door hardtop. Of this priceless beauty Humm asserts, “Everybody creams their jeans when they see it." Even before the car cruise, mark your calendar for another fun event to take place at Starky’s on Aug. 19: a Celebrity Dunk Tank featuring a num ber of local luminaries, including Rose Emperors and Empresses Babalou, Scotty, Lotta Liquor, Don Hood and Alicia Day as well as reigning Mr. Oregon Bear Mark Brown and former Mr. Bear/Mr. International Grizzly Steve Strong. The event, which is a benefit for Our House of Portland, will be hosted by Chi Chi and will feature a special appearance by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
