Especially at the beach, where Marc and I spent the long Fourth of July weekend at the oceanfront cabin of our good friend Brian Wilson (the other Beach Boy). Joining us were Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams; opera singer Carl Halvorson, who’s moving into a condominium at the Benson Hotel; and Portland Center Stage artistic director Chris Coleman, who regaled us with hysterical tales of growing up in the Deep South. The adorable Ramesh Manickam joined us and cooked a fantastic Indian feast. While Brian’s house is the perfect coastal retreat, Eric Schnell and Judge Kemp moved into a 1,900-square-foot urban retreat, beautifully designed by Eric and featured in the pages of The Oregonian. To celebrate, they invited a group of homos into their home, including Fred Ross, who told me that his long-awaited driving tour of South America begins at the end of July. The owner of Tease Salon/Day Spa, Jamie Gleason, was there, teasing me with his sexy looks (as always). And Geoff Wren and David DeMoss described their recent move into the Elliot, right across from Portland Art Museum. ijÜ Out Going BY FLOYD SKLAVER Portland Center Stage’s Cabaret this fall, directed by the aforementioned Chris Coleman, a casting idea that began in our dining room with a sugges tion by Marc. Walking through the festival booths, a sign read ing “Paddle Daddy” caught my eye, and 1 ambled over to inspect the leather straps and wooden switches on display. There I met Marcus Greatheart and Al Waddell, who were gracious enough to pose while I perfected my technique on recent high 4 school graduate Grant Miller, who won a national PFLAG scholarship to attend Vassar College in the fall. Another thing that caught my eye was Rob Meeker’s T-shirt, which read: “Mr. Pecker’s Rooster Farm. We Have the Biggest Cocks in Town.” Rob, owner of Central Cafe and the nonsmoking martini bar Elbo Room (both in Gresham), actually bought the shirt at the Gresham Fred Meyer. Continuing my stroll, I found Kathy Beige, the butch half of the popular lesbian advice columnist duo Lipstick &. Dipstick. (Gina Daggett is the femme side.) Kathy and Floyd disciplines Grant Miller while Paddle Daddies Marcus Gina have a book being pub Greatheart and Al Waddell look on. lished this fall called Lipstick Which reminds me, I’ll be leading The and Dipstick’s Essential Guide to Lesbian Relationships, Adventure Group through the museum’s spectacu and their booth hawked a number of clever promo lar exhibition Rembrandt and the Golden Age of tional items including lipstick in Mommy Queerest, Dutch Art on Aug. 9.
