D ear M s . B ehavior : I’m transgendered, FTM, and have been living as a man for two years. I don’t think most people can tell; I seem to basically pass as male. I’ve had top surgery, but my bottom surgery will have to wait until 1 can afford it. Here’s the question: I met a woman, Jen, at the dog park, and we had a date last weekend. I’ve been struggling about when to tell her. I don’t want to wait until we’re about to have sex to say, “Oh by the way, 1 used to be female and I don’t have a dick yet.” My friend James, who is also an FTM, says he always tells women before he even asks them out. I’d prefer to BY MERYL COHN eet to know someone a bit first. But it’s unclear to me how soon 1 need to tell. Is it a matter of ethics to tell before you even go on a date? Ms. Behavior —Ray D ear R ay : The time to tell is before your tongue is in your date’s mouth (which otherwise makes it hard to talk). If you tell before you’re in any way sexually intimate, you’ll avoid a lot of awkwardness, as well as the possibility of your date feeling betrayed by something that seems like a secret. Since questions about “When to Tell” come up frequently from readers, here’s a list of some of the other things you should tell someone before you swap spit, particularly if you’re interested in more than a one-night stand: 1. I’m married (or in a committed relationship). 2. I’m with the circus. 3. I’m not sure if I’m gay or if this is just an experiment. 4. I’m leaving town tomorrow. 5.1 have several children. 6. I’m pregnant. , 7.1 have a sexually communicable disease. 8. My dog likes to watch. 9. I’m a hopeless cling-on. 10. 1 have a jealous ex who tries to systematically destroy the people I date. 11. Mental illness runs in my family. 12.1 haven’t had a job since 1986. 13.1 live at home with my mother. 14. My mother is a narcissist, and 1 might be one, too. 15.1 don’t like oral sex. 16.1 can’t come unless___ . (Fill in the blank with whatever applies: a) I’m wearing my special shoes, b) you pee on me, c) a circle of Little People call me a dirty whore, etc.) 17. My other girlfriend is waiting in the car. D ear M s . B ehavior : Upon finishing my tour in the Middle East, 1 came back home to my adorable boyfriend. We’re readapting to life back together rather well, but for one thing. You see, 1 gave him a couple of long flowing dresslike robes—you know, the kind you see some Arab men wear in the movies. He loves them so much he insists on wearing one every night, to bed no less. He says he loves the feel of the silky clothes on his skin. However, 1 can’t stand that artificial barrier between his skin and mine. Not even chang ing the bed sheets to higher thread count convinced him to get back to sleeping in the buff again. I really miss cuddling next to my naked hubby; how can I convince him to get rid of those awful robes? What would you say if they accidentally got shredded in a laundry mishap? —Another Middle East Crisis D ear A nlyther M iddle E ast C risis : Can’t you think of a creative way to make your boyfriend strip? Try easing up on your complaint for a while, and let your boyfriend enjoy sleeping in the Arab dresses. After a few days or weeks, offer him a massage. He might shed the robes for a better rubdown, and if you’re proficient enough, you might inspire him to remain naked. If that doesn't work, try a magnificent blowjob, and suggest that he removes the robe so it doesn’t get sullied. If both of your attempts fail to motivate him to remove the robe, don’t take it personally, because it probably has nothing to do with you. Perhaps your boyfriend enjoys the sensual feeling of the silk, or maybe he’s working out a childhixxl desire to wear a dress. Even if he’s using the robe as a physical barrier to achieve distance from you, don't be threatened; it’s prob ably a phase that will pass in a few weeks or months if you don’t make it into a big deal. If, however, you shred your boyfriend’s robes in a laundry mishap, he’ll probably idealize them (the way you would a person who dumped you), mourn their loss, seek to replace them with a dozen silky dresses and never again go naked. • M f .RYL C ohn is the author of Do What I Say: Ms. Behavior’s Guide to Gay and Lesbian Etiquette.
