Day, who opened the brightly colored cafe in July, explained that her partner of 10 years, Doreen McCauley, has had the nickname “Door” since childhood. “We decided to use doors in this way not only because we like doors, but found it an environmentally sound way to build out the space,” said Day. Much of the cafe’s interior is made of salvaged doors from the Rebuilding Center. “Instead of purchasing new lumber or new tables from restaurant supply stores, we were able to find mate rials with a history and with character.” The Funky Door offers Stumptown Coffee, Tao of Tea kxise-leaf teas and Dragonfly Chai as well as baked goods from La Provence and Old World Bakery. In addition to vegan baked goods from Sweetpea Bakery, Day brings in a variety of savory foods including quiche, sandwiches and bagels. Since moving here five years ago, Day and McCauley have fallen in love with Portland. “There is such a commitment here to locally owned business, and people will go out of their way to support their community.” Day said she particular ly enjoys the Holgate location because it is in the middle of several businesses but maintains a neigh borhood cafe feel. “The Funky Door is a comfortable place to hang out alone and drink coffee, grab a cup on your way to work or meet friends for an afternoon out of the house. We worked very hard to make this a really comfortable and welcoming place, and we continue to strive to make the best drinks around.” business watch The Funky Door Is Open COMMUNICATE business cards It remains a mystery whether the building at Southwest 12th Avenue and Stark Street, housing Burnside Triangle anchors Club Portland and Silverado, is on the market. Phil Stanford reported Sept. 26 in The Portland Tribune that downtown developer Greg Goodman had purchased the building. The columnist speculates about the future of the gay landmarks, stat ing, “It seems unlikely that Goodman will continue to oper ate the bathhouse." Dick Lawson, owner of Club Portland and partial owner of the building, said that an offer has been made but that both parties are confined to a confidentiality agree ment. He denies that the building has been sold and that Goodman is the potential purchaser. She also loves the environment and is devoted to building her hand-crafted clocks from recycled wood. “There is so much wood out there being wasted," she says, “and some of that wood could be used to build beautiful furniture, as I do now." Johnson is a self-taught woodworker and has been building Craftsman-style furniture for five years. “I started doing some research on furniture and found Gustav Stickley and Arts and Crafts- style furniture and bought a couple of plans and made a Morris chair and a Stickley rocking chair." After Johnson made some pieces for her self, friends started commissioning her work.
