Give and Take The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus wants you to donate your unwanted junk and come buy something you’ve really been wanting at its sec ond annual Garage Sale Extravaganza. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 21 to 23 at 2451 N.W. 28th Ave. Donations are accepted from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays and from 11 a.m. to 4 p m. Saturdays through July 19. You can also arrange pickups by calling 503-226-2588 or e-mailing extravaganza@pdxgmc.org. The chorus is always engaged in fund-raising endeavors to continue its mission, which is “to expand, redefine and perfect the choral art through eclectic performances that honor and uplift the gay community and affirm the worth of all people.” Ticket sales only cover about 50 per cent of its $200,000-plus budget. Corporate spon sorships, grants, individual donations, program advertisements and membership dues are various ways the chorus raises money. But the garage sale is arguably the coolest. “1 find they are a fun way to make money and get the whole community involved,” says Gary Coleman, audience development director and Extravaganza coordinator. “Everyone has stuff they don’t need or want, plus we are a 501 (c)3 nonprofit and can give a tax-deductible receipt for people’s donations.” PGMC has been holding garage sale fund raisers for years. Back in the mid-’80s, Coleman organized the group’s first-ever garage sale at Embers. “We made $1,500 and had a chorus member dressed up as a clown directing traffic to our sale from the corner of Burnside and Broadway.” Last year, the chorus formalized the Garage Sale Extravaganza with a two-day event in July at Trinity United Methodist Church. The event, which drew three 26-foot truckloads of dona tions, raised $9,400. This year’s event will be held at a warehouse in the Northwest industrial district. “We have 3,200 square feet of space with a loading dock. It not only saves us from moving everything twice, it also provides us with dropoff capability,” says Coleman.
