D ear M s . B ehavior : I am a 33-year-old woman and have only recent ly started dating women. 1 have two questions about sex that I’m embarrassed to ask my friends. First, I’m a little overweight right now. If I’m making love with a woman, is it OK to put all of my weight on her, or should I support myself on my hands and knees? If there’s any rule, no one has told me (and I frankly never worried about squashing men). Second, should 1 thank the person I’m with after sex? It seems like the polite thing to do, but I worry that it makes it feel like sex is a commodity. —Maxine Ms. Behavior BY MERYL COHN D ear M axine : First, it depends what you mean when you describe yourself as “a little overweight.” Some women say that because they’ve eaten two extra com chips the previous week, and others are describing true obesity. Taking your description at face value, unless your date appears to be suf fering (gasping, turning blue or ceasing to move), it would seem unnecessary to perch on your hands and knees during lovemaking. Full body contact is far more delicious than the alternative. You can thank someone for sex if your intention is to say, “Hey, that was great, thank you," as if you were thanking someone for a nice back rub. But please be careful not to sound too grateful, as in, “Thank you, thank you, thank you, no one has fucked me in years!” or too perfunctory, as in, “Thanks for doing me, now go away.” D ear M s . B ehavior : My partner proposed to me on Christmas Eve. We are happily planning the ceremony for next year, and 1 have several questions: 1. How do we coordinate a bachelor party where my dad and brothers will attend? At my brothers’ bachelor parties we had strippers; is it appropriate for me to have male strippers at mine? 2. What is considered appropriate language for the invitation? Do we say, “You are invit ed to the wedding...” or something more watered-down so as not to offend? 3. How do I tell my colleagues at work about the wedding, as I’ll clearly need time off for the honeymoon? 4. We are also planning to have documents drawn up—medical power of attorney, etc. Should we sign these as part of the ceremony, or is that too political? 5. Is it OK to register for gifts, or is that just tacky? 6. While my family has expressed a desire to attend, they can’t travel with so many chil dren. We don’t want to get married in their home state of New Hampshire. Any suggestions? —In Love D ear I n L ove : 1. Male strippers and straight male family members don’t always mix well. If you hire strippers for the party, pick a different night to go out separately with your dad and brother. Not that there’s anything shameful about a dude in a G-string gyrating in your dad’s face, but merely so that you’ll feel free to enjoy the lap dances at your own party. 2. Are you actually worried about using the word “wedding” in a wedding invitation (even while contemplating allowing a stripper to swing his dick at your father)? The word “wedding” is inoffensive, even (or especially) if it’s two men who are getting married. If you plan to go through with this event, you’d better get used to words like “marriage,” “wedding” and “husband.” 3. It’s time for you to overcome your fear about telling your colleagues that you’re marry ing your boyfriend. Prepare in advance, if necessary: Stand in front of the mirror and say, “queer wedding.” Then say “gay marriage" and “homo honeymoon.” Wait a minute: Are you even out to these people? You don’t have to stand on your desk and announce that you’re a butt pirate, but you should at least mention that you’re marrying a man. 4. Do not draw up a power of attorney or health care proxy document at your wedding unless you want your guests to die of boredom. Take care of legal matters at your attorney’s office before the wedding. Make sure to include a prenuptial agreement, which is also boring and unromantic but helpful in protecting your assets. 5. Registering for gifts is fine, but it’s tacky to send out announcements about where you’re registered. Feel free to tell those who ask, but don’t solicit gifts or drop the name of the place you’re registered into casual conversation and then pretend it’s an accident. 6. If your relatives in New Hampshire care to attend your wedding, they can arrange for baby sitters to watch their spawn. The mountain shouldn’t come to Muhammad, and the homos shouldn’t go to the “Live Free or Die” state for the convenience of others. ® MERYL C ohn is the author of Do What I Say: Ms. Behavior’s Guide to Gay and Lesbian Etiquette.
