Most of the approximately 200 annual cases are occurring among HIV-positive men. Syphilis had almost disappeared from Sydney’s gay community in the 1990s, hut now, experts say, many HIV-positive men have returned to riskier sex practices. Syphilis also can be spread by oral sex. Similar increases have been reported in some U.S. and European gay communities. but activist groups claim to have information that the rape charge was bogus and that the two were hanged solely for being gay.
