September 3. 2004 ». jllSt <Hlt 13 FTTHTTTnilnews Ml Because of this, the campaign’s messages must be fine-tuned to those swing voters whose ballots can make or break the result. “We are not necessarily running a campaign that says everyone has to agree on gay mar riage,” Kassell says. The short-term goal of the campaign is sim ply to defeat the amendment, she adds, explaining that the campaign is only one com ponent of the larger conversation about same- sex marriage. “This campaign exists to win one battle,” Ballo says. “Because if we don’t win, the conver sation can’t continue.” Kassell acknowledges that the limited focus of the campaign can be frustrating, especially to queers who have been working long and hard for equality. “One of the things needed in this campaign is patience with folks who aren’t there yet,” says Kassell, referring to undecided voters who may not feel comfortable supporting same-sex mar riage but who feel strongly that discrimination is wrong. “If the only place we get to with some voters is ‘I don’t want to write this into the con stitution,’ that’s OK.” Other states will likely look to Oregon to see what works, or what doesn’t, in the continued struggle for equal rights. Wellman says policy makers as well as the general public will be “tun ing in” to the vote here. Because of the state’s recent history regard ing other anti-gay measures, Kassell says the No on 36 campaign “has a level of sophistica tion and support...that makes us better posi tioned than other states” to defeat this latest effort and once again protect the rights of queer Oregonians. jM Sometimes you just need a car.
