The Supreme C ourt, however, ruled on appeal that Rape Relief, a private organization, may define “woman” as it sees fit even though British Columbia considers Nixon female and has given her female identification documents. W hen the federal government extended numerous spousal benefits to same-sex couples in 2000, it chose Jan. 1, 1998, as the date for retroactive access to pensions. The class-action mling rolled that date hack to April 17, 1985— the day equality guarantees ta lk effect in C ana das Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The extension increased the number of gay men and lesbians eligible for benefits by approx imately 1,500, at an estimated cost to the gov ernm ent of $307 million.
