For 3 1/2 decades, Walter Cole has not only entertained the city but enriched it by per forming at charitable events and raising thou sands of dollars each year for social causes sup porting the area’s gay, lesbian, bi and trans res idents. According to the mayor’s office, Dar celle was honored for joining with other organizations fighting the A ID S crisis; regular ly contributing to scholarship funds for chil dren of gay and lesbian families; and represent ing a social space that points to a broader sense of what it means to be an accepting and open community. “Whenever asked, Darcelle provides her rare talent to worthy causes,” a news release stated. “Darcelle has never had to do worry much about marketing, as she is constantly being asked to perform for community func tions and is known for seldom refusing.” The awards are presented annually to peo ple who have made outstanding contributions to the community during the past year. With 2004 promising to be a white-hot elec tion year, the board of Pride Northwest chose “Queer We G o Again" as next year’s theme, adding a dose of political satire to the mix. Robby Bricker won dinner for two at the Fish Grotto for entering this suggestion into the theme contest. The Pride festival will be held June 19 and 20 at Waterfront Park. The parade will wind through the streets of downtown June 20. Pride Northwest’s new president and parade coordinator is Tobin Britton, a member of the Rain Ryders Motorcycle Club, American Broth- erhixxl, National Leather Association and Soci ety of the Black Rose. She replaces Jack Keegan, who resigned because of schixil and work demands. The other board members are Patricia Muhlbauer, vice president and security coordina tor; AJ Gxirts, secretary and sponsorship coordi nator; Joe Dressman, treasurer and media coordi nator; Jimmy Yohe, entertainment coordinator; and Jeska Duckworth, festival coordinator. Pride Northwest still needs committee chairs for fund raising, outreach and technology as well as co-chairs for the entertainment, festival and parade committees. Applications are due Dec. 31. Plenty of volunteer opportunities are available to help organize Portland Pride 2004. People espe cially are needed on the entertainment, festival and parade committees. The entertainment committee also is seek ing performers of all ages and backgrounds to participate in Portland Pride 2004. Musicians, speakers, authors, poets and artists are encour aged to sign up.
