Isn’t it a place where them wihi IJ he sufficient time for many petv pie to voice their thoughts and feelings, especially when this latest deadly incident of police violence is “the straw that broke the cam el’s Kick’’? Yet Sgt. Brian Schm autz, a police spokesm an, fretted that the Rev. Roy Tate interrupted the detective’s presentation “after less than one hour" |T/w Portland Tribune, July 4|. Taken out of context, this forgets the two m onths— yes, 60 days— the com m unity “w aited" for this public forum so they could express their feelings and frustrations. T h e format: 5 to 8:15 p.m ., police and detectives speak; 8:15 to 10 p.m ., the com munity gets to speak— m eaning that people who cam e on time waited even longer, having to keep their em otions in check. Is this C h ief Kroeker’s promise o f “ intense com m unity debate"? So, let’s have another forum— for us, the petv pie. We in the white community especially need to hear what Portland’s communities tit color have experienced at the hands of the police. We need to hear firsthand the brutality, the injustice, the harassment, the intimidation. Then all of Portland can he aroused to he on fire with the injustice of not only thus latest deadly event, hut the historical record of racism in the City of Roses. Having just seen and LO V ED Queer Eye for the Straiffu G uy, I’m thinking that any straight guy who’s comfortable enough with himself that he is willing to be perceived as gay on television will ulti mately lessen homophobia, and I’m all about that. It’s definitely goin g to be a “ w ait an d see’’ experience, but overall, I’m en th u siastic that B ravo is w orking to be an inclusive network.
