B ehavior : 1 met a woman I’ll call Adrienne through an online personal ad and real ly like her. She final ly scanned her photo and sent it to me and, much to my dis may, I don’t find her at all attractive. 1 am so hummed out. Adrienne is not “ ugly,’’ hut she’s real ly not my type. 1 don’t think of myself as shallow, hut I do believe chemistry is a necessary ingredient in a relationship. I’d love to meet her and he friends, hut I’m not thinking about kissing her anymore. Should I tell her now that I’m not romantically interested any more? I’m afraid it will he obvious that it’s because I saw her photograph, and I don’t want to he hurtful. My friends tell me that I shouldn’t meet her to try to he friends because we all have enough friends, and I shouldn’t waste her time or mine. But Adrienne is way more interesting than they are. What should I do? — Emily the Terrible D ear E mily the T errible : You may need a few new friends to supplement the apparently dull ones you have now, and Adrienne might he a gixxl bet. But what’s your nish in reject ing her as a prospec tive date? There’s nothing wrong with waiting until you meet in person to conclude that someone is not your type. Chemistry is a beautiful thing, hut it arises from more than just a flat image. It depends on things like touch and mannerisms and pheromones and even on huskiness o f voice and lus ciousness o f smell, which is way more sensory information than you can get in the form o f a photograph. If you like someone's personality and sense o f humor and way o f being in the world but they’re not your type, yes, that’s gixxl grounds for sticking to nothing more or less than friendship. But, occasionally, someone who d<x_\sn’t appear to be your type will exude a scent that drives you wild, and friendship won’t he enough for you. You’ll have to have her. You can’t make it happen and neither can she; it just has to he there. You’ll know, because you won’t he able to stop licking her neck. breakfast with friends, we were talking about ex lovers who are now "straight.” G reg m entioned that his old hand some boyfriend N athan (w h o is now married to a woman hut still fools around with m en ) lives in the town w e’re m oving to. 1 became so anxious that I drank lour cos mopolitans! G reg said that my feeling worried is ridiculous and that he has no inter est in Nathan. But Nathan was G reg’s most significant boyfriend until I came along, and Greg happened to mention in the past that he and Nathan had “amazing sex.” During the entire year o f planning our move, why do you suppose Greg neglected to mention that we’re m ov ing to Nathan’s hometown? I’m not sure I want to move anymore. A m I really just being “ ridiculous” ? — D on’t Want to Play the F<x)l D ear D o n ’ t W a n t to P lay the F o o l : A re you anxious because you think Greg plans to meet Nathan for a drink, talk about old times, unzip Nathan’s pants and remind him o f why he used to he gay? Have you asked Greg directly about whether he plans to even see him? Talking about it for a while should give you some sense o f G reg’s intentions or at least how honest he’s prepared to he. You haven’t said what city you’re m oving to, but hopefully it will he big enough for the three o f you. You and G reg need to talk about how each one o f you feels about monogamy, which will help you to assess whether your feelings o f in security are based in reality or in your own neurotic little mind. Either way, you can’t protect against infidelity by staying where you live now. Your boyfriend, if he wanted to, could have sex with someone else in your hom etown or even on your chenille sofa while you’re out buying a hagel and a newspaper. She finally scanned h er photo and sent It to m e and, m uch to m y dismay, I don't find h er at all attractive D ear M s . B ehavior : After a year o f planning, my boyfriend, Greg, and I are moving : together to a new city.
