juna 2Q. 2003- rTîTTTTÏÏTRTlnewsbrie/s movement can register now to take part in “ Intersexuality: An Interdisciplinary Explo ration”— probably the only course of its kind in the world— from June 23 to July 17 at Portland State University. It will be taught for the second time by Intersex Initiative director Emi Koyama. “Intersexuality” is an interdisciplinary explo ration on social, medical, biological and political issues surrounding intersexuality and the lives of intersex people. First, students will learn basic bio logical facts about intersexuality as well as the cur rent treatment protocol on intersex conditions. Second, they will read about the patient-centered reform movement by intersex people as well as among medical professionals. Lastly, students will learn to critically analyze medical, academic and popular culture texts produced about intersexuality from the patient-centered point of view. The class concentrates on discussions about readings but also incorporates lectures, films and guest speakers. This four-credit course is offered through the Womens Studies Department of Portland State University and is supervised by Ann Mussey. It meets from 1 to 3:20 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Koyama will deliver the keynote address dur ing a rally prior to the Seattle Dyke March, which steps off 7 p.m. June 28 from the Seattle Central Community College Plaza at Broadway and Pine in Capitol Hill. Two of the recipients are based in Portland. Basic Rights Oregon received $15,000 in gener al operating support, and Western States Center received $10,000 in program support for gender justice. “More than 40 diverse organizations com mitted to eliminating discrimination based on sexual orientation across nearly 30 states are the most recent recipients of the Gill Founda tions March grant cycle,” said Rick Jung, senior program officer. “We congratulate these organizations on their successes and are pleased to assist them in fostering the L G B T movement across the country." The Denver-hased foundation awards grants to organizations supporting gay, lesbian, bi and trans initiatives and HIV/AIDS programming. The next application deadline is Aug. 1. Performers included artist and writer Serena Blossom Appel, Amanda Shepard of the city Bureau of Development Services and Misty Town of the Rose City Softball Association. Speakers included Tony Stroh of the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus, Mary Beth Brindley of the Elder Resource Alliance and Barbara Steinfeld of the Portland Oregon Visitors Association. Bill Sixlerberg, LG BTQ Community Center Fund Project hoard member, encouraged audi ence members to voice their opinions about the much-anticipated facility, which is still in its conceptual phase.
