ipril 4*2003 The Rose City Gay Freedom Band celebrates spring with Glitter and Be Gay! on April 12 at Rose City Park United Methodist Church Portland Pride 2003 in June. The band will be leading the parade directly behind the grand marshal, which is “a great place to be,” says Ostenson. “Anybody who has marched in the parade would know it’s just something that you’d like to do every year. T he energy from the spectators is overwhelming.” The leader should have some experience in color guard, and people who just want to be part of the team must be “energetic and want to have fun and be a part of an organization. The only criteria really would be enjoying what you’re doing and have a sense of rhythm,” Ostenson laughs. The concert, Glitter and Be Gay, starts 8 p.m. at Rose City Park United Methodist Church, 5830 N.E. Alameda St. “It’s a fun concert because it does have a variety of both serious and frivolous music,” Ostenson says, “a little classi cal, a little show tunes, a little march, a little Threepenny Opera, all kinds of different stuff.” Tickets are $5-$8 from Gai-Pied or at the door. If you’re interested in being a part of the color guard, call 503-790-2170 or visit www.rcgfb.org. Phat fat girls R emember when you thought it was terrible to be fat? FatGirl Speaks committee head (and Techntxlyke.com founder) Stacy Bias exclaims: “It’s time, ladies! Every day we’re slammed by the media with images of an arbitrary phys ical ideal. Every day we’re told that we’re too much of this, too little of that. Every day we see that goddamn commercial with the sad, dumpy fat girl ‘before’ and the chirpy, chipper skinny girl ‘after.’ No one ever tells us we can be happy as we are.” C an you tell Bias is sick of all that? “It’s time to celebrate ourselves as we are now. S o slip something slinky over those curves, pull back that hair, show that glorious two- chinned smile, bare that beau tiful belly, shake that sexy ass, and come on down to FatGirl Speaks for a night of sister hood and solidarity!” Organizers can still use your volunteer time, fashion show items, vendors and performances.
