The queer watchdog group fielded a record 170 requests for help between Jan. 1 and March 1, a 30 percent leap from the same peri od in 2002, when it received about 119. The upsurge comes as U.S. trtxips mobilize for a pos sible conflict in Iraq and amid continued reports of anti-gay harassment within the armed forces. “We project receiving a record 1,100 calls for assistance during the 2003 calendar year," exec utive director C. Dixon Osbum said. “As long as our military continues to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Ameri cans, SLDN will remain on the front lines, pro viding zealous legal assistance to our clients.” Two full-time staff attorneys and a legal director field an average of 25 new calls for help each week. In 2002 the team responded to 913 requests for assistance and has seen demand for its services increase annually. Since 1993, the network has provided direct legal help to more than 4,300 men and women.
