fl. 200?» CpjTïaout Invest a little time and I'll take it from there. D espite all of the documented health risks, queers smoke more than heterosexuals. Is this because of low self-esteem , youthful foolishness or sheer stupidity? Have we been duped by shrewd tobacco company m arketing techniques? Everyone knows they need a financial plan for the future, but it's hard to find time to do it. That's where I can help. Since 1987, I've helped guide couples, domestic partners, families and businessmen and women towards their goals of prosperity and comfort. All it takes to start is a phone call. I ueers tend to spend more time in bars than heterosexuals, and we still tend to participate more in drinking and drugs. I think the reasons for this are twofold (at least): There is more pressure to fit into a certain kind of mythological queer lifestyle (i.e., pretty young gay men in bars), and bars historically have been our gathering places. To those of us in large, queer-friendly m et ropolitan areas, it would seem it is getting "eas ier” to be out, but nationally, this is far from true— which is reason N o. 2: W e deal w ith the stress o f com ing out by num bing ourselves w ith cigarettes, m arijuana, beer and a num ber of o th er coping mechanisms. Also rem em ber that we are living on the “left coast” and tend to be more health-conscious here than, say, N ew Jer sey or Missouri, where it seems everyone still is smoking and in denial about the dangers o f it. For me, the film was a meditation on appearance and reality. It's an amazing and pro found work, disturbing and delicious, where everything manages to be both familiar and weird. Talking about it afterward, 1 realized that, for me, the issues of sexuality and race were almost incidental. I don’t think 1 missed the point, any more than 1 think Shawn Levy “forgot” to write that Haynes is a gay filmmaker. If it’s correct, to quote M cQuain, that Haynes is “respected, uncompromising and innovative,” he and his work are going to be considered from more than one perspective. confidence, low self-esteem. And local bars cater to those who smoke. W hen the Camel crew comes to the bars and gives out free stuff, why don’t the Nicorette crew come around and pass out free patches?
