auQust 16, 2002 4 It is clear that more work needs to be ♦ done by the ch ief and City Council to prevent discrimination within the bureau. Relationships between the Sexual Minorities Roundtable and the bureau need to be improved. As your city commissioner, I com mit to taking an active role in police over sight and to be proactive in preventing hate crimes and discrimination. L oren B undeson L iz C allison S erena C ruz I ln my past six years in elected office I par- * ticularly have brought women into more empowered positions in community work. I organized people for environmental projects to improve urban fish and wildlife habitat. In 1994, I helped organize the first watershed council for Tryon Creek, and most of our members were women. I also helped another woman be appointed on my Conservation District board. She later ran for election to this position and won. 1 will continue to try to motivate more ♦ people to join in local political and civic life. Inclusion of different perspectives helps to strengthen Portlands cultural fabric and makes our city a more interesting and vibrant place to live. "1 City Council just approved this as a cul- J * ture district. Need to establish early medi- ation/discussion sessions with city bureau staff for both neighborhood and business associations and police. T h e Portland Police Bureau particularly ♦ needs improved leadership from the police commissioner, who happens to he the mayor. W ithout clear, compassionate and sensible direction from its own commission er, this type of hierarchical bureaucracy co n tinues to send contradictory messages both to its own members and to the general public. T h e street officers are overworked and stressed, and they will convey this to the pub lic. T h e current chief has not been a good fit for Portland. City Hall under the current mayor places too much reliance on expensive national searches for upper bureaucratic staff, as this habit wastes city funds and cuts out Portland’s own best talent from serious consideration. I 1 co-sponsored the ordinance establishing a ♦ domestic partnership registry in the coun ty. Since September 2000, over 385 couples have registered as domestic partners. We deserve full recognition of gay marriage— the registry takes us one step closer by providing documentation to assist in obtaining employer- provided health and other benefits. I co-spon- sored the county’s first Civil Rights Ordinance in November 2001, banning discrimination in employment, housing and public accommoda tions based on sexual orientation, source of income and gender identity. I amended the county employees Charitable Giving Campaign policies to mandate that any agency receiving employee contributions must have anti-discrim ination policies. 1 was honorary chair of AlDSWalk 2001.1 strongly support Basic Rights Oregon and actively worked on the No on 9 Campaign. 1 will continue to work with the newly # elected commissioner of labor to change the policies of the Bureau of Labor and Indus tries so that discrimination complaints based on gender identity will he investigated and enforced. All discrimination complaints under the city and county Civil Rights Ordi nances must have equal protection and enforcement. 1 will make sure that all city hir ing, contracting and purchasing procedures follow anti-discrimination and affirmative action policies. 1 support the establishment of the Bum- ♦ side Triangle Advisory Group. The city should work to improve the Triangle’s identity; we can install better identifiers to mark the dis trict, formally declare it a district, provide sup port for G LBT businesses and ensure adequate police patrols. I have been active in civil rights for sexual ♦ minorities since the early 70s. I marched in the first Gay Pride parade in Portland. I talked with the Portland Police along with Dar- celle XV. They wanted to know how to include sexual minorities into the community, to pre vent ATTACKS. IT W ORKED. The Portland Police had a listening ear and were more objec tive than they are given credit for. I have been active on human rights forums and worked on campaigns to elect officials that were for the rights of sexual minorities— former Gov. Bar bara Roberts and Rep. Gail Shiblcy’s campaigns as well as numerous others. I have also worked behind the scenes to better educate people including Republicans, Independents and Democrats. 1 The quest for equality is an ongoing job. w ♦ As a commissioner, my job would be to make sure that my door is open to you and to say I have been there since Day One. None of my opponents have. The most important way to preserve the Burnside Triangle is by getting those busi nesses involved with the city and preserving the area from the wrecking hall and developers who have an eye on the district as we speak. We must preserve this area, and I would make it para mount on my list. The Portland Police Bureau is to some ♦ degree on the right track, which was started by former Mayor JE “Bud” Clark and fonner Chief Tom Potter. I would love to see Katie Pot ter as our next police chief. I really think that Chief Potter was more effective than Chief Kroekcr. We have come a distance, and we can go a step further by having a new chief from with in the ranks. The Portland Police are second to none and deserve a hand at being open-minded. 4 V isualize T our /n n w DM ata, • • • • • • Personal Im age Design H air & W ig Styling Specializing in Trans-Form ation Professional M akeup Exp with feature film & TV Friendly Private Salon 2 4 Auto, Home, Life & Business □ "Your Independent Insurance Agency" 3 / Budgett blind. î FOR A LIM ITE D TIM E ONLY NOTI Excludes Vignette® window shadings and Serenette ® Softfold® shadings ONLY VALID AT TIME OF OROER NOT VALID WITH OTHER OFFERS A u th en tic Creations 286-7000 2 * 1 5 0H! My family is a proud supporter of the Cascade AIDS Project. I also support the Employment Non-Discrimination A ct and the inclusion of “sexual orientation” as a protected classification under Oregon law. In 1980-82,1 worked for Bar ney Frank, first as a campaign aide and later as his legislative assistant in Washington, D.C. In 1 9 9 9 ,1 invited Barney Frank to be the keynote speaker at the Campaign for Equal Justice annu al fund-raising luncheon. I am proud to have his support in this race. In a landmark legal case, I successfully represented a health care worker who was fired for opposing HIV discrimination in the workplace. Lobby Salem to include sexual orientation as a protected classification under state law. Actively oppose discrimination in our community. 1 support the decision to establish the ♦ Burnside Triangle Advisory Group, which will work to preserve this historic gay cultural district for Portland.
