Just a little more than a month after Pride 2 0 0 1 , the planning already is under way for next year’s celebration P ortland C hurch H onored for J ustice A dvocacy Portland congregation was am ong five honorees designated as exem plary advo cates for ju stice by the U nited C h u rch o f C h rist during its 23rd G en eral Synod o n July 16 in Kansas C ity, M o. A total o f 1 3 ,0 0 0 delegates gathered for the event. A A insw orth U nited C h u rch o f C hrist received the Local C h u rch Justice Award. Bernice Powell Jackson, Justice and W itness M inistries execu tive m inister, said the congregation embodies the d e n o m in a tio n ’s co m m itm en t to being truly m ultiracial, multicultural and accessible to all. Its diverse m inistries include outreach to gang m em bers, th e elderly, abused wom en and people with H IV /A ID S. In 1997, the congrega tio n declared itself to be open and affirming and has been a strong religious advocate for the les- Beautiful Fae^s bian, gay, bisexual and trans community. T h e Rev. M . Lynne Sm ouse-Lopez is the pas tor. “T h e y are a powerful witness for ju stice, strongly grounded in the biblical vision o f inclu- sivity and liberation,” Jackson said. D o n ald B ened ict and th e Juan A n to n io C o rretjer Puerto R ican Cultural C enter, both o f C hicago; M ark Lewis, 15, o f Black R iver Falls, W is.; and R oberta Perry o f Deland, Ha. “These five exhibit excellence among many he n e^ ly elected president o f the N ational O rganization for W om en, the country’s largest fem inist group, will be in town to deliver the keynote speech during the O regon chapter’s statew ide m eeting. Kim G andy will discuss "B e a tin g Bush to th e P unch: Fighting for W o m en ’s R ights in th e W Years” from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 4 at the O perating Engineers U nion H all, 555 E. First S t. in G ladstone. A longtim e activist, she served as a senior assistant district attorney in New O rleans and later opened a private trial practice where she litigated child support, m arital property, do m estic v iolen ce, sex and race discrim ination, lesbian m other custody and oth er such cases seeking fair treatm ent for wom en. S h e was a c tiv e in m any co m m u n ity organizations, including holding office in th e Lesbian and G ay P olitical A ctio n Caucus. T h e general public is invited. Admission costs $5 a person. G andy’s appearance will be preceded by O re gon N O W ’s statewide meeting, “Putting W om en’s Issues Back on C enter Stage,” from 10 a.m. to 4 p m. T h e gathering will explore strategies for the upcoming year, discuss recent elections and help activists reinvigorate their chapters.
