Sociahtes@aolcom) ( 11 / 00 ) D ear M s . B ehavior : My girlfriend and l were invited to spend a long week- end with a fairly new gay male friend with whom we’ve shared a few enjoy able outings. The house we were to visit (his) sounded incredible— a fabu lously decorated, beautiful water front retreat on a quiet island. We’d been looking forward to the week end and had planned some day trips and elegant dinners. We had even chosen an appropriate house warming gift to bring our host in his new home. But right before leaving, we were shocked to receive a cui t e- mail from our host expressing his stress over our arrival and asking us to delay our trip by a day. He went on to say in the e-mail that our “messy” dogs were not welcome (this had previously been discussed and O K ’ed by him), and with one day’s notice he told us we should leave them at home. He also implied that our visit was too long and that we’d be overstaying, even though he’d initially asked us to lengthen our time with him. We canceled our weekend, but now we’re having second thoughts. As many gay men are known to be obsessive about possessions and fre quently unable to express them selves in a logical manner, should we have pretended to ignore these faults in our new friend and gone ahead with the plans? Do you think working through this with him will involve taking on the whole male psyche and is better left to people who get paid for it? — Weekend Thwarted D ear W eekend T hwarted : In friendship, as in dating, you often don’t see what you’re getting until you get up close. Your host exposed his neuroses before you even arrived, which is a bad but helpful sign. So, you and your girl friend should consider yourselves lucky that your visit was thwarted before you stepped out of your SU V and into Mr. Poofter’s Island. Now you can just be irritated in the comfort and convenience of your own home, instead of tortured in the sanctity of his perfectly decorat ed Museum of the Homosexual Artifact. Ms. Behavior imagines that Mr. P. had to consult with several mem bers of his Pilates class and his inte rior designer in order to work up the courage to ask you to leave your “messy" dogs home, if he had n’t, they probably would have shed their luxurious fur (or worse) onto the foofy queen’s well-pressed Frette bed linen. The queen would have had a hissy fit. Hair pulling would have ensued. (Helping you visualize this unpleasant scene is meant to affirm that you made the right decision.) “Working through” something is worthwhile when there’s a close, long standing friendship or at least a comfort able compatibility that suggests that a great friendship is in the offing. That doesn’t seem to be the case here. Ms. Behavior first thought she was being harsh when she imagined telling you to dump the hyperele gant homo, but then she reviewed the facts: 1. He basically disinvited you. (There’s nothing wrong with invit ing friends for a sans-canine visit, but telling a lesbian to leave her dogs home without adequate time to get nurturant doggy care is the same thing as rescinding the invita tion. 2. He did it the cowardly way, via e-mail. The “’’whole male psyche” is far too complex a thing to be analyzed by a couple of lesbians with messy dogs. But a therapist is also unlikely to help in this case, since prissy homosexuals are known to only hire professionals who empathize with their aesthetic emphasis. D ear M s . B ehavior : Three months ago I met my boyfriend at a bar and went home with him. Since then, I’ve never moved out. My boyfriend is not my type physically, but I love him because he is a sweetheart. Now I am having second thoughts about this, because I am always thinking of other guys— primarily cute, thin guys. I’ve cheated twice because I get very satisfied looking at a thin nice body and my boyfriend is a lit tle fat. He is also about 12 years older than me. What should I do? — Frank D ear F rank : You have two choices: Ask your boyfriend for an open relationship (so that having sex with others doesn’t involve sneaking around), or let him go. Living in your boyfriend’s house while having sex with “cute, thin guys” behind his back is not a good choice. Pinching the fat around your boyfriend’s abdomen to shame him into losing weight or making pig noises when he eats Devil Dogs would also not be helpful. You say you love him and that he’s a sweetheart, so he deserves to be treated with respect. It also sounds like he deserves a boyfriend who isn’t a shallow, vapid user, so see what you can arrange. ■ Write your confused and conflicted heart out to Ms. B ehavior at M sBehavioT@ ad.com . 31
