with a Caribbean flair will
be served Feb. 18 at the
Northstar Ballroom in
North Portland. After­
ward, guest authors and
actors will read from
favorite Southern writers,
including Alice Walker, Eudora Welty,
Dorothy Allison and Zora Neale Hurston.
A reception gets things rolling at 6 p.m.,
and the feast begins at 7 p.m. The Northstar is

event, which is put on by a
dedicated group of volunteers,
benefits different community
groups each time; the lucky
beneficiaries this go-around
are the Portland Lesbian
Choir and Our House of Port­
land.
The festivities take place at
the Scottish Rite Center, 1512
S.W. Morrison St. in Portland.

VIII transforms Portland into a
hotbed of men—and women—in
stripes, gold braid and fun hats with
attitude.
Billed as one of the three largest
events of its kind in the world, the
weekend draws dashing faux firemen
and sailors from the seven seas.
Activities, which are centered in
Portland, include parties galore, a real
submarine tour and boot blacking. For

Cammermeyer, who was the highest rank­
ing U.S. military official to be discharged after
identifying openly as a lesbian, went on to suc­
cessfully challenge her dismissal in court.
