B he YW C A of Greater Portland has opened a 24-hour winter shelter for homeless fam ilies. “Twenty-four-hour resources for homeless families in Portland are very limited,” explains YW CA Executive Director Jean DeMaster. “For the last 10 years, family shelters in Portland opened in the early evening and closed in the early morning. Being outside all day long is a real problem for homeless families.... Children can’t take naps. Parents can’t cook because they are outside, so families must eat cold food.” The 24-hour shelter, which opened in late October, allows families to be inside and togeth er all day. According to DeMaster, this offers a distinct advantage, allowing parents to look for work while their children stay at the shelter. Shelter residents are required to seek work and housing during their stay. Several activities will be offered to support residents, including job search and substance abuse support groups, after-school tutoring, and nutrition menu plan ning classes. Romeo puts his personal guarantee that every item we f l APPROVED sell is built with the utmost in comfort and durability. * Free Yourself * Free Speech * Free Futon Cover Portland 3 3 5 -0 7 5 8 Futons & Furniture Beaverton 626-0400 1916 NE Broadway 12300 S W Broadway 10-7:30 Mon-Sat &. 12-5 Sun. 10-7 Mon-Sat &. 12-5 Sun.
