The ILGA representatives and Robinson also discussed the possibility of ILG A producing a report on gay and lesbian oppression world wide to help Robinson lobby for appointment of a U.N. special rapporteur on lesbian and gay issues. A follow-up meeting is planned for early next year. ILG A is a federation o f more than 400 gay and lesbian organizations from 75 nations. VATICAN CITY P ope John Paul II canceled a meeting with Swedish Lutheran Archbishop Karl Gustav Hammar Oct. 5, reportedly because Hammar is too pro-gay. Hammar supports allowing gay and les 4 bian ministers to regis ter their relationships under Sweden’s same- sex partners law. He also approved a recent showing in Sweden’s main cathedral of Ecce Homo, an art exhibit that shows Jesus and the apostles in drag and as leathermen. Following the Vatican’s announcement, Hammar told reporters: “I deeply regret the decision of the Vatican and I am very surprised that this point has been made so strongly.... That they have decided to humiliate the entire church of Sweden in this way seems strange to me.” ZAM BIA he U.S. Federal District Court for Puerto Rico struck down a disciplinary rule Sept. 30 that prohibited Puerto Rican police officers from associating with gay people. Police Regulation 29 stated, "It is a grave offense for police officers to associate with pros titutes, homosexuals, or other persons of dubious reputation.” Judge Hector Laffitte said the ban served no state interest and violated the First Amendment to the U .S. Constitution. The case was brought by Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund. He suggested the nation should “cool down" over the matter of the group’s emergence, but also said, “To me personally [homosexuality] is a very sad thing indeed.” He added: “However, the fact that it makes me sad does not mean I should bury my face in the sand and declare the problem nonexis tent.. ..
