In 1990, Dorf founded the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. Over the years, the nonprofit commission has worked globally to protect and advance the rights of sexual minorities, and Dorf has helped the IG LH RC grow from humble beginnings into an organization with pull— not to men tion a budget of nearly $1 million. Dorf is scheduled to speak at 4:30 pm in the Vollum Lounge at Reed College, 3203 SE Woodstock Blvd. For more information about this free event, call the school’s events line at 777-7755. T he play opens March 27 and continues through April 25. There are some special dates during the run to note: Tuesday, March 31, is Gay and Lesbian Audiences night. If it’s theatrical give and take you want, the cast will field questions from the audience after the April 7 show and the April 12 matinée. A more in-depth look is offered at a forum with scholars and artists in the rehearsal hall after the April 5 matinée . A he Portland Opera greets spring with the spectacle of Puccini’s Tosca, a show in which the occasionally ill-tempered title character delivers love, passion, jealousy, rage and revenge. Five Civic Auditorium performances are scheduled at 7:30 pm March 28 and 30, April 1 ,3 and 4- Half-hour “Opera Insight" programs at 6:30 pm allow the audience an opportunity to dissect the opera. Slated program speakers are stage director Keith Warner, chorus master Carol Lucas, Portland Opera Public Relations and Marketing Director Jim Fullan, Saturday Academy Assistant Director Bill Crane, and conductor Salvador Brotons. Variety quoted Bono as saying the show “is so gay it’s excluding a large part of our society.” A statement issued by G LA A D insists that Bono’s comments were taken out of context. The rebuttal also includes a strong response from Bono: “To suggest that I feel her [Ellen Degeneres’] work has been anything hut groundbreaking for the lesbian and gay com munity is just not true— and to misrepresent my views and ignore the work I’ve done in sup port of Ellen for the past 18 months is an out rage."
