The song is “The House I Live In (That’s America to Me).” Neither performer ap parently gave thought to the fact that they were singing a duet, and that maybe they should try to sing together (what a novel concept). The result ing sound is of two choir members trying to outdo each other, and it sounds awful. They seem to have no respect for each other vocally, only re specting their own— very separate—ideas of what the song should sound like. Most of the CD sounds like that. Two perform ers, two ideas for the song, with no collaboration going on. It sounds like Sinatra is singing in some quiet little piano bar, with a half-empty pitcher of martinis, and occasionally a friend stops by to sing an impromptu song. No forethought, no collaboration, no consideration to the listener. T h e C h ie f t a in s The Long Black Veil ** The title refers to the mysterious woman who used to visit the grave of Rudolph Valentino, and for all I know it could have just as well been describing this mysterious, out-of-nowhere (at least as far as I am concerned) band. But The Chieftains have been around for 31 years. They produce classic Celtic music from Ireland, or they restyle songs to give them that sound. The best surprise for me was the song ‘The Foggy Dew.” Sin6ad O’Connor’s voice sounds so at home with these traditional instruments from her homeland. The song is very touching and powerful on an emotional level. At First glance I was ready to set this CD aside and let it collect dust. It seemed too "earthy,” “traditional,” or “folksy” for my taste. But it has endearing qualities. The tracks are vivid and pow erful, very strong. I wasn’t too thrilled with the Rolling Stones and Mick Jagger songs, but the instruments kind of canceled them out. Not quite something I would look for, but still a good CD. V a r io u s A r t is t s The Unplugged Collection, Volume One **** I remember sitting and watching Salmonber- ries with my friend Lisa at Cinema 21. Perplexing movie, but that song k.d. lang sings captivated me. I swear I sang it to every record shop em ployee in Portland trying to Find a copy of it. Well here’s the jackpot for all of you out there in the same dilemma I was in. She sings the song “Bare foot” (track Five) right here, and it sounds just like I remember it in the Film. Elton John does a very moving version of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” Am I the only person that cries every time— excluding the George Michael version— I hear that song? “Why,” by Annie Lennox, has a chilling effect that increases with the unplugged style. Also included are “Don’t Talk to Me,” by the now- split-up 10,000 Maniacs, and “Half a World Away,” by R.E.M. I have to give some credit to MTV. Although I can see Unplugged for the really big marketing ploy that it is, I really enjoy the emotional out pouring that happens with the acoustic versions of the songs. I’m sure it’s much easier to feel a song when you aren’t trying to sing over a drum set. One of the most fun songs on this CD for me was the bluesy rendition Lenny Kravitz does of “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” The original rocks me out, and this version gives the song a much sexier, sultrier (dare I say bisexual or queer?) edge. Look out for it. V a r io u s A r t is t s Soundtrack: Pret-a-Porter (Ready to Wear) * * * Four of the songs on this CD are remixes of previously released songs. There are “Pretty” by The Cranberries, the Perfecto remix of “Lemon” by U2, and two others. Really good remixes. Also on this CD is Deep Forest (read: Enigma with chants from African Pygmies—great sound!) with the song “Martha.” Janet Jackson lends a lush cut with her new single “70’s Love Groove.” Not quite the soundtrack I would have chosen, but a great CD nonetheless.
