Lambda Book Report solicits nom inations. O v er 300 nom inated titles are review ed by a panel o f five unnam ed ‘experts” w ho narrow the list d o w n to five books in each category. Five judges are assigned to each category. T hey rank the five books based on their literary m erit. A ccording to Jane Troxell, senior editor o f LBR, the d efinition o f “ literary m erit” is left to the individual judges. T he Ferro-G rum ely Award recipients are chosen by four to six readers who in turn have been appointed by Steve G reco o f the F crro-G nunely Foundation. Before the announcem ent o f this y e a r’s recipients, Jew elie G om ez, author o f The Gilda Stories (Firebrand), said, “T o m e being nom inated is valuable.. J t really is a nice feeling, a culm ination o f years of struggle.” D orothy A llison, author o f Bastard Out o f Carolina (D utton) and w inner o f tw o 1989 l-ammys for her book o f short stories Trash (Firebrand), said, “W inning had a large im pact on my career. T he aw ards m ad e a difference in getting m y first contract.” Ruthann Robson, w inner o f a 1989 award, said that her w inning a F erro-G rum ley caused a m ainstream agent to call her.
