Entitled “Myth America,” the musical review will both poke fun at and honor the mythical aspects o f gay and lesbian cultures in America. Audiences can expect songs about the major institutions which influence daily life, including the media, religion, education and mainstream B American culture. Bridges is made up of 28 lesbians and gay men, most o f whom also sing in the Portland Lesbian Choir or Portland Gay M en’s Chorus. The concert is a fundraiser for their upcoming trip to Denver for GALA, the triennial gathering of lesbian and gay musical groups from around the world. The concert will be interpreted for the hearing impaired, and there will be assisted wheelchair access. Tickets are $8.50 in advance or $ 10 at the door. As Miller puts it, “My work is generally very available, funny, pushy and outrageous.” As Bob Hicks o f The Oregonian puts it, “Miller, who blends elements o f stand-up come dian, actor and storyteller, is a watcher: a partici pant-observer who has lived gay life in America during a time both liberating and frightening. He has stories to tell and he tells them well.” Tim Miller made national news in June 1990, when the National Endowment for the Arts pulled a grant previously awarded him. Miller, Karen Finley, Holly Hughes and John Reck were denied funding because of the supposed “obscene” con tent of their work and its lack of “artistic value.” The four performance artists sued the government and the NEA, that case is still pending. Miller has just received another grant from the NEA in the amount of $8,000 to support his work. Stretch Marks will be performed two nights only-Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at 8 pm at Echo Theatre, l5l5SE37th(ofTH aw thom e Blvd.) in Portland.
