To the Editor: Thank you for a well-written and researched article about Gail Shibley, our new Oregon legislator and OUT lesbian. I’ve known Gail for a number of years and agree enthusiastically with your profile of her as bright, articulate, and diverse in her knowledge and skill. She has the courage of her convictions to be the legislator we have always wanted. Gail is one of a handful of OUT lesbian and gay legislators in this entire country. Her actions are being watched by many eyes, friendly and not so friendly. There is enormous potential for a heated campaign of hate and bigotry to unseat her in the 1992 election. I’m developing my own personal strategy to help assure Gail Shibley that being OUT is not a political liability. First, I can be OUT to more friends and work colleagues. Knowing that Gail took her chances gives me a little more courage to take chances of my own. Second, I know I’ll be involved in Gail’s campaign at a level higher than I’ve ever committed. Third, I plan to track and talk about the legislation that she becomes involved in. There s a motto in my workplace that says: "If you always do, what you’ve always done, you’ll always get, what you’ve always gotten." Gail Shibley is a difference in what we’ve always done.
