of pride
e have met lesbian and gay
history, and it is US!” (with
apologies to Pogo.) Our
community consists of more than the
leaders out in front of the parade or
representing us in the legislature or in
the service organizations that keep us
strong. We are also the butchers, the
bakers, the candlestick makers of
Northwest Portland, Hawthorne, and all
of the other neighborhoods in the city.
Rich, poor, and every bank statement
level in between, lawyers, doctors,
artists, truck drivers, gardeners, we are
a community rich in diversity. We are
the reason the leaders lead and the
supporters support, we are the reason
the Frontrunners run, PGMC and PLC
sing, Just Out comes out, CAP
supports, Lavender Winds sails kites,
the Furies play softball, the bowling
league sponsors the Rose Bowl Classic,
and Queer Nation is queer. Anndee
Hpchman presents a sampler of
interviews taken from this rainbow
community. She has talked with eight
people ranging in age from 18 to 62,
people who have seen it all, people who
are the future of gay and lesbian pride,
the people who make the struggle
worthwhile. In short, folks, it’s us. We
are the pride.
