On the march last year she learned to appreciate the changes that could be made on a grass roots level, changing peoples’ minds by direct contact. On the U.S.-Soviet walk she expects that walking, cooking, and talking with Rus sians will help end the fear and distrust that arms buildup is based on. It is the 2nd leading cause of death among teen agers. While the suicide rate dropped slightly in Oregon in 1985, it continues to be higher than the national rate. To help alert the public to this critical problem, Governor Neil Goldschmidt and Mayor Bud Clark have proclaimed May 3-9, 1987, Suicide Awareness Week. Laura Scolar, Executive Director of Metro Crisis Intervention Service, stated that many suicides can be prevented. She explained that the typical signs that often precede a suicide attempt include depres sion, sudden or unexplained changes in behavior, and efforts to get one’s affairs in order, including reviewing wills and giv ing away personal possessions. Metro Crisis Intervention Service developed an area-wide telephone and mobile crisis intervention service. This service would help assure that individuals and families in the area would have assist ance when facing problems which might overwhelm or exceed their coping skills. Metro utilizes a large body of volunteers in this effort which holds down the cost of services. Another benefit to the commun ity includes the training received by these volunteers which increases the number of individuals who work as natural helpers assisting friends and families who find themselves in crisis. Metro Crisis Intervention Service is a 24-hour telephone hotline serving the Portland metropolitan area. The agency receives over4,000 calls each month from individuals experiencing a wide variety of problems. Those who call receive free, confidential telephone counseling, information and referral to other communty resources. The crisis line num bers are 223-6161 or 681-7020. < PSU course offers different view of women Portland State University’s 1987 Women’s Studies Summer Program is of fering a special five course component en titled: “ Against the Grain: Alternative Perceptions of Women’s Experience.” Each of the classes will offer new repre sentations of the female experience and femininity, designed to challenge tradi tional scholarship and ideas.
