The letters were Filled with passionate references and undeniable evi dence of a dear and valued love between the two women. Lorena Hickock, the first woman repor ter for AP, was an ambitious woman from an impoverished background who walked a fine line between being one of the boys and being a lady in order to succeed in her career as a journalist. ‘‘Beloved Hick: Eleanor Roosevelt’s First Lady,” written and acted by Pat Bond, chronicles the 40 year relationship between these two remarkable women. Bond uses the letters to dramatic effect as Hick reads beautiful and impassioned ex cerpts from them as she talks about herself and her life with Eleanor Roosevelt. New York Native critic Donald Olson wrote, “ What one is not prepared for here, and what gives the characters and the play as a whole a deeper resonance and fascina tion , is the compelling sense of history that surrounds and shapes both Hickock and Roosevelt.” (Olson’s review praised the play’s opening at San Francisco’s Theatre Rhinoceros in February, 1984.) Pat Bond has appeared annually in Port land in herione-woman plays for the past several years. Her most recent was in ” Gerty, Gerty. Gerty Stein Is Back Back, Back” last summer. Bond is known to television and film audiences from her ap pearance in the pioneering gay/lesbian documentary “ Word Is Out” and Mary land Public Television’s production of “ Gerty. Gerty, Gerty . . . ” on PBS. “ Beloved Hick: Eleanor Roosevelt's S "Alumnae News" debuts he Portland Women’s Theatre Company presents Alumnae News, Sarah Dreher’s emotionally charged drama. Directed by Judy Clover, Alumnae News is double cast, starring on Friday nights, Mary Miles, Cherise Millhouse, First Lady,” at the Northwest Service Center, Saturday, May 30, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $8.00 in advance, $9.00 at the door, and are available at Catbird Seat Bookstore, Music Millenium, Artichoke and Sara Packer, and on Saturday nights, Serena Barton, Jeanne Kincaid, and Faith McDevitt. The play will be performed at the Metropolitan Community Church (1644 NE 24th) Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00, May 15th through June 6th. Tickets (on a sliding scale of $5-$7) may be purchased in advance at A Woman’s Place Book Center (1431 NE Broadway, 284-1110) or at the door. Alumnae News is the story of three wo men who attended an elite Ivy League col lege in the 1950s. Their meeting ten years later sparks an awareness of hidden truths behind a disturbing incident from their col lege days: One of the women was cruelly betrayed because of her love for another woman, a “ scandalous” disclosure that, shocking in the context of a 1950s wo men's college, has changed her life ir revocably. Dreher says she wrote the play because she feels the 1950s are still with us today, in our society's refusal to address the issues of social and personal homophobia.
