sumed, the number of hands employed and the value

the miner. Th lack of adequate means of reaching
tho mining district i felt in many places, but, at the
jroent rite of advancement, this lack will not long
remain.
The stress arc lighted by aix hundred incandes
cent and twenty-four arc electric lights. Gas and
Metric light companies supply these illuminants
throughout the city for public and private purposes.
Th city owns it water works system, on which

nwwilating the expenditure of $1,000.00 more are
con U-in plated. In order to purchaao the water works
from the corration which owned them, the city is
sued five j-r cent lond to tho amount of $500,000,
which wrre readily Hold at an average price of 1.08,
showing the confidence in the city's financial condi
tion. The city haa thirty-two miles of water mains,
and the pumping capacity of the works is fifteen mil
linn gallon er day. Tho supply is obtained from
the Willamette river, alwut five miles up the stream.
The average daily conaumption is five million gal
lon. The Portland Paid Eire Department is an efficient
organisation, ojHTating under tho city board of fire
comtniMioneri. The official report for 1887 shows
the value of real property and apparatus held in trust
by th organization to Ik- 171,:W).21. Tho total run
ning ripcuM-i for the yew were $.'H,027.CO. There
are thirty-lhree electric fire alarm boxes, and tho sys
tem is in excellent working order. Tho numerical
strength of the department is ninety men. There aro
twenty horses, seven engine, with necessary adjuncts,
and seven thousand feet of rubber how. Tho losses'
by fire during the year amounted to $31,17:1.72, for

The grand total of receipts and payments of
moneys at the Portland postoffice for 1887 was $4,
105,271.12. The total number of reports and clear
ances of marine craft at the Portland custom house,
exclusive of river boats, was four hundred and twen
ty, with an aggregate registered tonnage of five hun
dred and forty-eight thousand one hundred and
eighty, for the year ending January 31, 1888. Of this
number, one hundred and twenty-sii, with a tonnage
of eighty-five thousand six hundred and eighty-seven,
wero foreign, including fifty-one American vessels, of
an aggregate of forty-one thousand five, hundred and
ninety-one tons burthen, which cleared for foreign
ports, and the remainder, two hundred and ninety
seven, with a total of four hundred and eixty-two
thousand five hundred and three tons burthen, were
coastwise arrivals and departures. With the improve
ment of the Columbia and Willamette rivers, now
