American Vessel is Sunk New York, April 18 -The loss of the American steamship Zexlanlia on the British coast early this month was due to striking a mine and two of the crew were scalded to death, according to offi cers of the vessel who arrived here to day on an American steamship, The Zealandia left New York on March 18 for Liverpool. A cable dis patch from London on April 7 said she went ashore during a heavy gale, broke in two and would be a total loss. The Zealandia officers said they were under orders from the ship’s owners not to discuss the vessel’s destruction and they refused to veil the circumstan ces of the hitting of the mine. The above funds will be sufficient not only to pay the In terest and the principal of the $6,000,- 000 bonds authorized by this act, but will also pay the interest and princi pal of the $1,819,280.55 in bonds author ized to meet the government road ap propriation. After paying these bonds there will be a surplus of at least $2,- 793,402.66. Since 1911 the increase in the number of automobiles in the State of Oregon has been 33% per cent per year. With the completion of good roads this increase will natur ally be larger.
