Those works built of steel backed by cement and supposed to be impregnable, have been reduced to at oms bv the German cannon. That fact vindicates what General Sheridan said when he was first in com mand of the United States army in the eighties. He recommended earth works where possible for seacoast defenses. He admitted that he got that idea from the defenses planned by our frontiers men, who had no money, to repel the attacks of the Indians. After our great war Admiral Farra gut made a visit to Great Britain and the continent. When he was resdv to return home he was obliged to board a ship anchored out in the bay of South ampton. The British authorities sent a life boat manned by young officers to take him from the pier out to the steamer. A great many ironclads were swinging on their chains in the harbor. Through these the boat with the admir al had to make its way. Pointing to these armored ships the admiral said: "Young gentlemen, those are very splendid, but it will not be I long until they are but scrap iron, for a I gun will surely be invented which will make mere eggshells out of them. >> If present events in Europe teach any lesson it is after all, the only thing in war not liable to soon become obso lete is the trained soldier. The chief preparedness which our country needs it to train every school boy over fif teen years of age in the elementary duties of a soldier. Remove Stigma gitimate Marshfield, Or.. Portland, Or., March 8- If the pi liir- euts of an illegitimate child are both unmarried, they should be forced to inarry to legalize the birth of the child and give it a name, said Judge W. N. Gatens in an address at the W. C. U. mid-year gathering yesterday at Cen tenary Methodist church. The child is always innocent, and must be protect ed, he continued. If the father is mar ried he should at least be forced to sup port the child. At present the father is under no legal obligation at all. Ev en if he has agreed in writing to sup port the child, the agreement cannot bo enforced, according to a supreme court ruling. Since the mother bears all the rest of the burden, the father at least should shoulder the economic part of it, he concluded. -----------♦(£>♦----------- Switzerland Must Get Ships Geneva, March 6, via Paris—Switzer land will be compelled to charter trans- Atlantic Hteamshiiw to bring her own food across the sea under protection of her own (lag if the war continues much longer, in the opinion of many persons here.
