It i s well known that whatever outer me, the resort to judicial pro- ceed .ngs will first be had, and it will be f >r Secretary Bryan to determine whe ther the government shall become a p- irly to a suit of this character. I nternaticnal lawyers hint that the adr ninistration is in an exceedingly da’ icate position for the reason that w) die apparently championing the Jap- ai ,ese cause before the California leg- is lature, probably from this point on, .it. must defend the California law ¿.gainst Japan in the diplomatic strug- ;gle about to begin, Taylor Retired Offtcia, Paper of the Cit// of Jacksonville, Oregon There has been some talk of establishing a canning factory in this city but the matter has not been definitely settled as yet. There is no question about such an establishment being a benefit to a community if properly C< nducted, specially in a region like this where fruit- g: jwing is the principal industry. But too much should n< t be expected: the managers of a fruit cannery could not pay the fancy retail prices obtained in the eastern markets, but if the grower would be satisfied with a fair price for fruit in bulk he would likely find at the cannery a market for his whole crop at prices which would still return a living profit. Speaking of a cannery reminds us of a suggestion m ide the other day by a gentleman of this place, that it might be a profitable proposition to manufacture grape juice and put it on the market for sale. The suggestion appeals to us as a.good one; most of the grape juice sold on this coast and there is lots of it used, is made in the state of New York, where grapes do not yield more than 50 per cent of the average yield in the vineyards adjacent to this city; then the juice is extracted, bottled and shipped across the continent and sold here at a price suf ficient to pay freight charges and still leave a handsome piofit to the grower and the manufacturer, 'By the way; ore of our merchants informs us that the price of Welch’s grape juice (the leading brand) has advanced very materially of late. Better look it up. It may mean m ich in the future of this region. Montenegro King Abdicates rule And Yet We Are Here ! Somewhat disfigured but still in the push with a splendid line of General Merchandise at lowest reasonable prices . Ì You will find us in the Kubli Building, where for so many years the honest face and generous hand cf the old pioneer— Jerry Nunan so cheerfully greeted you. ' But those days are gone by like a tale that is told and we are here with honest inten- tions to give you a square deal in all trans actions with the same honest weights, full measures, fair prices and courtesies so long extended to the good people of Jackson ville and surrounding country by our worthy predecessor London, May 5,—King Nicholas of Montenegro having placed the future of Scutari in the hand» of European pow ers, the settlement of the Albanian trouble now depends on whether Essad Pacha and Djavid Pasha will obey the orders sent by the sublime porte to withdraw the armies to the Turkish empire. it is believed as Montenegro has abandoned Scutari, Essad will recog nize the futility of his aspirations to the kingship of Albania, in the face of the Austrian-Italian threat to expel him.
