There has been some talk of establishing a canning
factory in this city but the matter has not been definitely
settled as yet. There is no question about such an
establishment being a benefit to a community if properly
C< nducted, specially in a region like this where fruit-
g: jwing is the principal industry. But too much should
n< t be expected: the managers of a fruit cannery could
not pay the fancy retail prices obtained in the eastern
markets, but if the grower would be satisfied with a fair
price for fruit in bulk he would likely find at the cannery
a market for his whole crop at prices which would still
return a living profit.
Speaking of a cannery reminds us of a suggestion
m ide the other day by a gentleman of this place, that it
might be a profitable proposition to manufacture grape
juice and put it on the market for sale. The suggestion
appeals to us as a.good one; most of the grape juice sold
on this coast and there is lots of it used, is made in the
state of New York, where grapes do not yield more than
50 per cent of the average yield in the vineyards adjacent
to this city; then the juice is extracted, bottled and
shipped across the continent and sold here at a price suf
ficient to pay freight charges and still leave a handsome
piofit to the grower and the manufacturer, 'By the way;
ore of our merchants informs us that the price of
Welch’s grape juice (the leading brand) has advanced
very materially of late. Better look it up. It may mean
