JACKSONVILLE, JACKSON COUNTY, OREGON, VOL. IL Valley Of The Rogue The great Rogue River valley eân be seen in all its splendor and magnificience at this season of the year. The trees with their heavy mantle of green foliage the clear, crystal-like streams laden with their finny family combine to make this valley the envy of the storm-ridden people of the eastern states. A ride on the train from Jacksonville to the Grays Harbor country in Washington will carry one through Avérai sharp changes in climate. One, in making this trip, will p&ss from under cloud less skies in the Rogue River valley through the great gorge of Cow Creek canyon into the Umpqua valley. It is slightly cooler north of the canyon with slight winds and fog until the Calapooia divide is reached. Here the Willamette valley heaas where the fog is replaced with rain and the wind grows stronger as the traveler proceeds to the northern state. The trip from Portland, north is very pleasant but Oiâs must bd equipped with his winter’s clothing in order ta enjoy thé ridé: The towns, we must call them towns, although sev eral have a population of over 5000, are backward in mun icipal improvements in Washington until Elma is reached. Elma is a lively littlê City of about 3000 people and is the first evidence of a city between Paftlâlld and Grays Har bor. One city, with 7000 souls, with all thé advantages possible, has no paved streets, the water system is pooh and the business houses are equipped with farm lanterns to hang out when the electric lights are not burning, which is about half the time, according to one business man. This town supports two small weekly newspapers with job plants in connection and three banks. The hotels, well, there is a sign in almost every block, but from the outward appearances of these buildings it is about as comfortable to get à châir and sit on the side walk over night. The towns of this state are more advanced in many respects than the towns of Washington although the Washington towns are backed up by large manufacturing interests. GOOD GAME HERE SUNDAY BLUE LEDGE CLOSED DOWN — • The Blue Ledge closed down and payed off all hands laat week. The cessation of work at this property throws a considerable cumber of men out of employment, and means at least a temporary loss to Jacksonville, as this town is the nearest available market point. It is stated, however, that the work so far done has been merely to develop the resources of the mifie'. The property it is claimed, has proven itself to be of such value that a smelter capable of handling 1000 tous of ore a day will be Installed and preparations will be made to operate the mine on a larger scale. It is almost an assured fact that the | mine will soon be running again with a greatly increased force. Tools and machinery was ordered by the committee and work will soon be I started on a well in the lower part of the city. They expect to sink to bedrock and then run cross-cuts. If sufficient water is found the committee will build a re servoir on some high point near the city where the water will be stored. as a result of the action of the water committee a permit was asked to build a brick block in the heart of the city. The interested parties do not wish to have their names mentioned at this time. That the city will grow when the water system is in stalled is a matter that requires no comment and the pro- I ispects of a system has brought activity to our city. | Several new residences will go up this summer and the future of Jacksonville is assured. The matter of arrangement of the Oriental exhibit has been placed in the hands of the most competent and artistic men at command and its display will be worthy of the magnificent collection. About the Oriental building are gathered the great buildings housing ths United States exhibit and the Alaska, Hawaiian and Philippine dis plays.
