Indiana. TAFT’S VICTORY IS ASSURED Returns from All Parts of Country Show that Republicans Elect President. HUCHES ELECTED Returns Also Give New York State and City to Taft. MARYLAND IS DOUBTFUL Official Count Required There and in Mis souri to Decide Who Leads— Colorado Democratic. New York, Nov. 4. Returns receiv ed up to a late hour tonight indicate that W. H. Taft, of Ohio, as president elect will have a vote of 309 in the electoral college. This is 67 more than a majority of the total electoral vote of 483. If Missouri votes for Taft, his total may reach 327. News of the late returns indicate that Maryland, after vicillating during the day and apparently being safe for the Democrats, had swung into the Taft column. The unofficial figures give Taft the state by 136 votes. In diana and West Virginia as well as Montana turned out to be safely Re publican. Colorado went for Bryan. If Missouri, which late developments place in the doubtful column, goes for Bryan, he will have a total of 174 votes, two less than he received in 1896. In 1964 Parker received only 140 votes, in 1900 Bryan received 155 votes and in 1896 the Nebraskan re ceived 176 votes. Taft’s 309 electoral votes compare with 336 received by Roosevelt in 1904; 292 received by McKinley in 1900, and 271 received by McKinley in 1896. The states certainly carried by Mr. Bryan are as follows: Alabama, 11, Arkansas 9, Colorado 5, Florida 5, Georgia 13, Kentucky 13, Louisiana 9, Mississippi 10, Nevada 3, Nebraska 8, North Carolina 12, Oklahoma 7, South Carolina 9, Tennessee 12, Texas 18, Virginia 12. Total 156. All the rest of the states are safe for Taft with the exception of Maryland and Missouri, where the issue is so close that an official count may be ne cessary to determine the result. The latest returns indicate that in the national house of representatives the Republicans will have 208 mem bers and the Democrats 172, with 11 districts missing. Taft’s plurality in the state of New York, according to corrected figures late tonight is 203,495, more than 28,- 000 in excess of President Roosevelt’s plurality of four years ago. Governor Charles E. Hughes was re elected governor of New York by 71,- 150. The returns as between presi dent and governor indicate a heavy splitting of tickets. The proportion of scratched ballots was about the same in the up-state districts as in Greater New York. Bryan’s victory in his home state of Nebraska was a sweeping one. Five of Nebraska’s six congressmen will be Democrats, while in the legislature only 18 Republicans seem to be elected out of a total oil 33 senators and rep resentatives. inois. Chicago, Nov. 3., 10 p. m.—The Re publican national and state tickets have gained a complete victory in Illi nois, although the pluralities will prob ably fall *hort of those obtained by the party in the Roosevelt campaign of 1904. Taft has carried the state by approximately 170,000 votes. Charles S. Deneen, Republican can didate for governor, ran far behind the national ticket, but has been elected by a plurality of about 100,000 over Adlai E. Stevenson, his Democratic opponent. Chicago and Cook county gave a plurality to Taft of 50,000 against 126,000 for Roosevelt four years ago. Outside of Cook county the plurality for Taft is not far from 120,000. The pluiality of Roosevelt in 1904 was 304,939 for the state. Stevenson, Democratic candidate for governor, carried Chicago by about 8,000 and the county of Cook by about 6,000. He lost heavily, however, in the state outside of Cook. The state legislature, which is to select a suc cessor to Senator Hopkins, will be strongly Republican. The Socialist vote showed a consid erable falling off from that of four years ago. Debs in 1904 received 69,- 225 votes. From the returns so far obtained it seems probable he will not receive much over 40,000. Wyoming Florida. Jacksonville, Fla., Nov. 3. Complete returns from 40 counties in the central and northern sections of the state give Bryan a plurality of 13,000. The counties yet to be heard from are principally those bordering on Arkan sas and Texas, which have large Dem ocratic votes. These probably will raise Bryan’s plurality to 18,000. Returns indicate that the legislature will be composed of 110 Democrats and 43 Republicans. This is a gain of 25 for the Republicans, but the defeat of United States Senator Gore is not threatened.
