COUNTY NEWS Francis M. Root, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in Ashland, on Helman street, Friday morning, aged 62 years. Deceased came to Ash land with members of his family about the first of the year. Day Henry Lewis, a pioneer, who has lived in Jackson county for 42 years, has the honor of being one man that attends strictly to his own business. He lives on a ranch nine miles east from Ashland and has been in Medford only twice during the past 42 years, and both of those times were in Sep tember this year. He very seldom leaves his home.—Tribune. A delicate operation was performed at the Ashland Sanitarium last Mon day by Dr. Norton, a .specialist from San Francisco, upon Mark Hurst of Medford. The patient was operated upon for hernia and the removal of the prostate gland. A new anaesthetic tropa cocaine—was used, which para lyzes the nerve centers without taking away the consciousness of the p itient. This anaesthetic is new to medical science, being used differently than any other anaesthetic known. It is injected hypodermically into the region of the spine. G W. Hopkins, proprietor of the Snowy Butte orchard, near Central Point, has closed a deal for his crop of Winter Nellis pears at a price which probably breaks the record for that variety of pears. Mr. Hopkins has 16 acres of Nellis' and the present crop brought him $19,0JJ, or about $12t)l) an acre. The Snowy Butte orchard is one of the very finest orchard properties in the state and is being improved each year. The orchard adjoins Central Point, and lie) on each side of the rail road presenting a fine view of an up-to- , date Southern Oregon orchard to trav elers over the Southern Pacific road. Mrs. Carolyn Dowden, widow of the late Joseph Dowden, and one of the best known pioneer ladies of Southern Oregon, died at her home near (¡old Hill last Sunday m irning at the age of of 82 years, says the News. Mrs. Dow- <len was born in Kentucky in 1825, and came to Linn county. Oregon, in 186". In 1869 she moved with her husband, the late Joseph Dowden, to Jackson county, and located on the homestead, which has become so familiar as the ‘■old Dowden place," and which was her home until the time of her death. Three children survive her. Mrs. George Lyman. Mrs. II. T. Pankey and Andy Hooten, all of Gold Hill. The following order was received at the postoffice in Ashland Saturday from F. E.
