INDEPENDENCE, THE TRADE CENTER AND MARKET CITY River and Rail Meet Here Where the Hop, the Hog, the Cow, the Clover and the Fruit Do Well One of th great feature for any community is adequate mar keting facilitiss. Where water and rail transportation meet the market is assured, and where competintf railroad lines invade your territory you have made for you a great factor for future development. You then must turn to your soil and your manufacturies. To make the farmer contented you must treat him right and he must also have the soil to produce the crops that pay and the ability to use the soil for that purpose. This requires education applica tion experience and the courage to experiment. Tht-se are fac tors that are, now becoming more and more dominent in the section tributary to Independence. In dependence is the center of a great farming section cf Oregon. She is the center of a growing dairy community and the month ly pay check from the cream, and the marketing of the hogs that take the ikim milk that is left is making our farmers independent. As a hop center Independence is known far and wide and during the picking season not less than 10,000 people take their outing in the Polk county hop yards. In 1880 there were 35 acrea in hops In Polk county now Independence is the trade center of probably 5,000 acres of hops alone. Her tributary country reaches across the Willamette river taking in the rich bottom land along the Ore gon Electric, reached by a free ferry, kept and maintained by. Polk and Marion counties. Industrially Independence has the largest and best equipped creamery in Oregon. From this creamery, in open competition butter was made that excelled all butter producing institutions of Oregon at the state fair. This creamery also manufactures ice cream and has its own ice plant. Its capacity has been doubled and doubled again in the last seven years, until it now produces more butter annually than any cream ery in Oregon. Independence has a first class flour mill, which handles all claases of grain, and has five different ware houses in different sections of the county from which it draws its supply for shipping or milling. This city also has a steam laundry, a feed mill, gravel bunkers where sand and gravel, screened or river run can be secured for the market, to which the railroad is building switches and which promises to be an important in dustry for the town, a sash and door factory, where all classes of mill work is done. It has under contract the erection of a saw mill that will employ over 100 men and through the building of this mill comes a railroad extend ing direct from Iddependence to the largest and best body of tim ber in Oregon. It is estimated that this timber is of quantity sufficient, to keep several mills of the large capacity of the one planned at Independence busy for fifty odd years. Independence from a view of transportation facilities is one of the few big towns of the Will amette valley to be on the direct Portland, Eugene & Eastern main line from Eugene to Portland. It will also be served by this same company with two branch or con necting lines, and the present motor service which with the new service that will reach the valleys along the Siletz means much to Independence. This is not all that Independence has, for by boat connections at East Inde pendence, Independence secures close connections with all trains on the Oregon Electric and still takes a lead. She has the full equipment and course of instruct ion in her schools for both manu al training and domestic science, has the full four year high school course, and competent teachers in every department. The is one of the few towns in Oregon that has taken the advantage of the Farm Scene Near Independence there is the river transportation and river boat service that helps to make this town one of the best commercially in the whole valley. You now want to know what we have done. During th past late educational methods and hence stands at the forefront in educational lines. Independence has a population of 1800 people, a school district assessed at over $1,000,000, and two fine school buildings. In- and all the lodges. Independence is endowed by nature with a fine location and a rich surrounding soil and it is up to her to mike good and she is doisg it. There is room here for the ehergttic, active man who metns to succeed by honest methods and th?re are opportu nities open here for just such men. CORmiSEXfENSION WORK REACHES HERE two years we have built here a dependence is in the commercial $40,000 hotel, located hnre a new center of Polk county. From her Picking Hops Near Independence state bank, added dry goods, hardware and confectionery stores, secured a new paper, the Independence Monitor, built a fine opera house and theatre building, the Isis, seating 500 odd people, that is modern in every detail, with the latest moving picture machinery possible to se cure, built several new stote buildings and a Masonic hall not equaled in any town the size of Independence in Oregon, we have paved our main streets and are now paving more. We have built a fine new high school, hav ing outgrown our present school quarters and needing more room. We have secured two machine phops and garages, and have made many progressive move ments along all lines of commer cial industry. Independence has a good .sewer age system, a good system of electric lights, and pure water for domestic use. The water under test has proven as good and as healthful as Bull Run water, the pride of Portland. The water plant hss been much improved during the present year, new wells and pumps being; establish ed. There are now eleven wells in the plant here and three pumps none of which are less than 350 gallons in capacity. Educationally Independence as a center the'wealth of the county radiates. As a market or shipping center she stands in a class by herself.
