Its organization wa3 effected in the early 70's by settlers from various parts of the county, who were members of the Methodist church where they came from. At the first there were but eij?ht charter members, two of whom still reside in Independence, viz: J. E. Elkins and Mrs. Lucy Whittaker. The little socie ety worshiped on alternate Sundays in the church building then owned by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, after wards sold and at present owned and used by the Catholic church at the corner of Monmouth and Fourth Streets. The Evangelical Church erected an edifice at the corner of Fifth and Monmouth Streets, which they sold to the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1894, and this property has remained in the possession of the church since. In the sum mer of 1910 the old church building was entirely-remodeled and greatly enlarged under the able pastorate of Rtv. W. J Weber and was dedicated in November. 1910. There have been many changes in membership as people have come and gone, but the services have been held regularly from the first, A very live Sunday School is maintained which is training a larpe number of the children and youth of this community for Christian activity. The church has been served by some able pastors, among whom might be mentioned Rev. Joseph Mottershead, Rev. E. W. Elayer of Minneapolis, Minn., W. J. Douglass of Port land, W. J. Weber of Hillaboro. The present, pastor, F. F. Sandifur, formerly of the Illinois Conference, isanalumnus of DePauw University and Boston School of Theology.
