From all the bulletins we have read on cow pas, besides the mass of matter on tho subject published in agricultural publications, we summarize as follows, giving the merits of this restorative crop: 1. The Iea will thrive upon every variety of "oil and will grow upon land too poor to grow clover. 2. It will produce a heavy and rich crop to bo returned to the nil in a shorter period than any other green manuring crop. 3. On the sumo land in one year two crops can be grown, but it re quires two years for clover to pro duce a hay crop, o it will no seen that four crops of leaa may be grown in the same time as one crop of clover. 4. The pea crop feeds lightly upon tho soil, but largely upon the atmosphere, appropriating nitrogen through the agency of bacteria that infest its roots. 5. It is one of the tast prepara tory crops for wheat, as it leaves the soil in excellent condition which is an essential element in the grow ing of wheat. ti. The rapidity of its growth makes it the only crop in the South that may lie unit as a manurinl crop between the harvesting of grain ami mo miwii g 01 it uu uic saine land. 7. It erows as vigorously as clover and in connection with that plant makes the land particularly rich in thoso vegetable agents that improve the soil. 8. It may be grown in connec tion with the com crop, furnishing almost nutriment as tho corn croi itself, with a postivo benefit to the land. 9. It is a substantial factor in tho production of cheap beef, pork milk and nutter. 10. It doubles the capacity o! the land for wintering stock and 1 it .1 . . ,i 1. - 1. gives uouoie 1110 material tor iii.ik. inc manure heaps. 11. By adding humus it pro- serves the humidity of tho soil, and so enables thecrops to resist drouths. 12. I he vinqsoftho cow pens furnish the very best material for ensilage. 13. The composition of cow peas and pea vine hay shows that they have a very high feeding value for all domestic animals. farmer 8 Voice. WASIUSfiTOX LETTER. The throe or four outside rows will be sprayed at first and the general spraying will be resoriod to few weeks later, to be followed up by a second application of the poison and even a third, if found necessary, A. Congress bus completed its work except the fag ends consisting of disagreements between the house and senate or tho several items the two appropriation bills which are in course of settlement, and ad journment this week is a certainty, although the senate bus not yet adopted tho house resolution, which provides for adjournment W cdnos day. While there are several ineaS' ures unacted uinm which many re publicans WJuld like to have seen passed at this sension, taken as a whole, the work of thesi-ssion has been satisfactory to the republicans, and the record made U 0110 upon which they will he proud to stand diirinu the campaign. The senate by unanimous con sent agreed that the Nicaragua canal hill should bo taken up Dec ember 10, and remain the unfinish ed business until disused of. That shows how far out of the way - are those who have been saying that tho republican leaders in the senate did not intend to allow that bill to pass. The bill would have been puuml before adjournment, would have dragged tho session into mid summer. It was discovered some time ago that was an agreement among democratic senator opposed to tho Nicaragua canal, who are more numerous than is generally known, to jrolong tho session in definitely, if an attempt was made to bring the bill to a vote. That and other good reasons made the republicans willing to allow the bill to go over. In the Equity branch of the supremo court of tho District of Col umbia, Justice Barnard imposed a line of 1100, and costs upon Mr. K. fl. Siggers, for contempt, in fail ing to obey an order of court for bidding Intu to advertise himself as successor to or in any way con nected with C. A. SSnow & Co., patent lawyers, of Washington I). C. Senator Hanna surprised both his enemies and his friends when lie jumped into a running d"bate on tho naval appropriation bill and tackled senators Wellington, Till man, Allen, Pettigrew and Teller, and got tho boat of each of thorn, and proved that ho could tako care of himself in the most dangerous of all senatorial lights, a running de bate. Tho senate added an amendment to tho military academy apropria tion bill that will make Gun. Miles, a Lieut. General and (Jen. Corbin a Major General, if agreed t6 by the house and it probably wilt be. In leaving the settlement of the senatorial dispute to tho voters in Montana, who will this year elect the legislature, which will next January meet to fill tho seat now claimed by Mr. Clark and Mr. Maginnis. which is the practical ef feet of the postponement of con sideration of the credentials, of the claimants by tho senate committee on elections, tho sonators took the easiest way out of the mess.
