The long talked of and hoped for Mi'hi'iim of transportation facilities to Mount Ashland has reached u. sat isfactory conclusion under the aus pices of the Ashland Commercial vliib. A committee consisting of K. T. Staples, K. ('. (lard and l.onis Itodge, which was appointed to in vcsligulu with a view toward provid ing nicaiiH of trnnsporlntion for vis itors through the canyon and to Mount Ashland, made reports and recommendations which were accept ed hy the eluli. The people of Ash land are unanimously enthusiastic about the mailer and are assisting the enterprise by liberal uid in the way of subscriptions as fast as so licited, says the Tidings. In looking backward, it is indeed surprising to know that this matter of popularizing Ashland canyon, Long's Lodge and Mount Ashland has been so long neglected by the city in general. Not withstanding the fact that the people of Ashland gen erally favored an appropriation for the (.'rater Lake scenic wagon road, which would have eont this city alone in the neighborhood of $10,000 or $12,000 in tases, yet no movement until the present time has been made toward opening up roads and trails up this magnificent canyon and to the summit of Mount Ashland, at our very doors, wtih provisions for trans portation. . The arrangements which are being made provide for wheeled vehicles to carry passengers from Ashland to Long's Lodge, where, under the man agement of Mr. Long, sleeping and tint; accommodations will be pro vided, and where he will maintain Middle animals for the trip up the bridle path to the summit of Mount Ashland, at which place there will also be provided shelter. Scott of Marion Believes State at Large Sees Possibilities. Kulem Dispatch to Oregon Jour nal Only nbol-tsightedness on the, part of some taxpayers in the state of Oregon has tnudo them object to the construction of u wagon und au tomobile road to (.'rater lake, accord ing to John II. Seo't, formerly county j judge of Munon county and presi dent of the Good Roads association. Judge Seott is emphatic in his statement thut Oregon has been slow to show her unsurpassable wonders to clamoring tourists and thut hud California, or Washington possessed a Crater lake millions of dollars would have been spent before this in the effort to nmke it accessible to tourists. He thinks also that another road from north to south should be added to the present plant. "The construction of this road to Crater lake will be of inestimable value to the state at large," says Mr. Scott, "'flint -improvement, with an other thoroughfare from the north to the south, connected with similarly well constructed highways in Wash ington and California, would bring! millions of dollars from automobile I nil' f ic alon. i "There would not be a great dcl of money spent Ly tourists at hotels and summer resorts, but a great k many of the tourists would become interested and would buy timber und farm lands and would assist in th great work of development, such as! lies in the water iowcr now dormant in this state. Other State's Highways. "If the state of California or Washington were to have a Crater lake, such as ours, they would with out delay have ss-nt millions of dol lars in its development that would soon be returned to them manifold by tourists. "The states of California and Washington are now constructing highways from I lie north to the south and it is incumbent on 'Oregon to construct a similar road if it is de sired to reap the great hanc.-l thai would otherwise slop at the slate line. "Such a road would, furthermore, cause large hotels to be built al all lhc principal towns through which the road would pass and also would cause heller accommodations to be made al or close to the sea coast and mountain resorts. Great State Developer. "Yes. it certainly would be a greai slate dcveloiH-r to construct a road running from east to west through the state of Oregon via Crater lake, ami I consider it a mistake for any taxpayer in the stale of Oregon to object to expending $100 in the con struciion of a public thoroughfare to a point that has the possibilities that Crater lake lias. "Further, when the expenditure of the $100.0011 will cause to be ex pended another $100.00(1. by the counties of Jackson and Klamath and several hundreds of thousands of dollars hv the government."
