It is u lucky tiling for Orcm and for southern Ore gon in pai l ienlar, that there are to lie no changes among the llarriinan railroad officials in Oregon. The present traffic chiefs understand the needs of Hie slate and are in synipalliy with its development as new men i Id not he. llcforc the present administration, the Southern Pa cific was ill ill favor wilh the people and looked upon as . a Mwinish corporation, inteul only on taking all the traf fic would hear. Por many years, millions of dollars an nually had heen drained out of the stale as Irihute to Wall street, and practically nothing done l develop Oregon. All I his has heen changed. Though new roads are slow in gelling under way, we are promised that the era of road , nil, ling is soon to ci ciicc. Put the railroad is now actively co -operating with I he people of every section of Oregon in advertising resources and inducing immigra tion. In short, Hie present railroad officials are doing for Oregon what Hie Southern Pacific has done for Cal ifornia for a score of years, while Oregon's portion was neglect. The Pogue Uiver valley has found loyal friends aiming the llarriinan chiefs. Every one of them is familiar with this section ami aware of ils possihilit ies. They are iv Hponsihlc for the new policy of magazine advertising and puinplilcls for community puMirily, of demonstration trains, of honicseckers' rales, which henel'it this section as well as the rest of Oregon. Messrs. Cotton and Kenton are not only brilliant law yers, hut so identified with the state thai their transfer to California might almost lie considered a Mow to Oregon. Mr. !. P. O'ltrien is the most capable of managers and thoroughly conversant with the needs of the people. Messrs. McMurray and Scott of the passenger department, .ami Messrs. Miller and Malhoeuf of the freight, department, are not only the most, competent of railroad men, hut fully in sympathy with the Rogue Uiver alley and its devel opment. The railroad itself speaks for Mr. Miller's abil ity as superintendent. A change in officials would have brought in new men not in touch with the situation and possibly have delayed progress for years. The present officials know our needs and will help us realize our desires. COST OF THE II' ''A PL AT II. The recent session of the legislature made an appro priation for a tuheit ulosis hospital which, while poor ad vertising for Oregon, has served to attract attention to the ravages of (he great white plague, which as a matter of fact, are less in this slate than ui any other. All Ore gon is a natural open air sanitarium for consumptives all they have to do is lo take advantage of it. An interesting article on luherciilosis is pulilished in the April Metropolitan hy O. Lewis. In this is estimat ed the value of a human life as follows: "Wheu a person dies of tuberculosis we are' apt to think, 'Well, not only are his troubles over, hut he is no longer an expense lo family, friends or the community.' Mo further expense, perhaps, hut nevertheless a great loss, not only in the circle of family or friends, hut also to ilie community ! There are. it is said. JiH.iHHi deaths from tu berculosis in the Tinted States annually. Let us be con servative and say l.0,iKHi. The average cue at time of death is o." xears. The normal life would on I'm' ,SJ years longer, or until the oTth year. Frederick L. Hoff man, a noted statistician, has estimated that the real lo.v of life of these l"0.tHM vii iims of consumption measured in time, is I.SiK,iHM years per annum. If wv assume thai the net value of a year of human life is at least s."ni. the real ! loss to the nation resulting from the disease, a large portion ot which is needless, may lie estimate,! at .MiMHKi.iKii per annum.'
