The city council held a short spe cial meet ing Thursday night, and passed an ordinance amending the tire ordinance so that it is possible to erect a structure not fireproof, in the rail road right of way .when the majority of t he whole council deems it to the best interest of the coin in unity that such a structure shall be erected. Speci fications ant! designs must first be sub mitted to the council. C. A. Mulbneuf, di vision freight agent of the Southern Pacific, reported that his company would make a rate of 120 cents a ton, or $1 11 car, on crushed rock from Cold Hay to Medford. This extremely low rate will enable the ma cadamizing of six or eight miles of city streets, and together with the bitulithic or asphalt paving on Seventh street, will make Medford the best paved town in Oregon. Mr. Malboeuf stated that, the busi ness of the Southern Pacific at Med ford and the Uogue liiver valley showed no effects of hard times as reported cast, but 11 constant, gain all along tlie line, and he looks for the present year to be the most prosperous in the history of the railroad in Southern Oregon.
