" - The Harriman lines have made a reduced rate of 50 per cent, on house hold goods and personal property of intending settlers from the Missouri river to all points on the system in northwest. This reduces the rate on such articles from $1 to 50 oents per hupdred pounds and aggregates 9100 per car. The same rate holds good from Ashland north in Oregon, so that the colonist rate is the same to any point in Western Oregon, as to Portland. Out oast, " the big scenic success of the last two seasons, comes to Wilson's opera house next Saturday night. It is a big scenic melodrama, built along new and novel lines and is a decided departure from the usaul sterotvnen thriller. The story of the play briefly tola is tnis: faul Weston, tne nero, is in the employ of a wealthy broker named Harcouit, who, appreciating the young clerk's fidelity, iB n bout to take him into partnership and give him nis daugnter, Madeline, for a wife, not knowing that the young people nave been married secretly, when his nephew, George De Voe, in terferes and charges Woston with rob ing the broker and being au ex-con vict. In past years, Weston has serv ed a term in prison on a false charge, this faot found out by De Vpe through the drunken futber of ''Bob" the little street gamin whom Weston has befriended.' This father had been a cell mate of We&ton and agrees to keen silent about the. past for a tnous- and dollars. Weston takes this sum from the broker's safe, intending to replace it next day from hiB own bank account. De Voe discovers the loss, takes the rest of themoney in tbe safe and fastens the crime on Weston. Weston is at once cast out by the brroker and all relations with bis wife are ended, while De Voe 1b taken into Harcourt's employ. Taking to drink, Westbn sinks lower and lower until finally ne becomes Involved in the robbery of a house which he dis covers is his own wife's. De Voe sgaln accuses blm of being inetlgatoi, but through the aid of "Bob" and "Ethel," Weston's innocence is Droven and he is finally freed and resnmes hiB happy life with Madeline and the little baby. A very novel scene it introduced in tne lonrtn act, where the two villains are scheming. During the evening Mrs. Whitman was presented by the members of the chapter with a beautiful paBt matron's pin, the presentation being made by H. U. Lumsden. After the installation cere monies had been concluded an excel lent musical program was rendered, consisting of vocal soloa by Mrs. Clarence Hafer, Clarence Mekeer and Dr. R. T. Burnett, and instrumental musio by Misses Fern Hutchison and Hazel Davis and Vernon Vawter. About eighty members of the chapter and Invited guests were present. several coming from Ashland. The committee in charge and to -whom this good time may be attributed was comprised of Mesdames L. J. Sears, D. H. . Millre, Chas. Strang, O. I. Hutohison. Dr. E. B. Piokel and W. F, Isaaos. This -item would not be complete without a mention of the refresnments served. Meeker were surprised by a visit from some fifty of their friends in Medford. They had probably overlooked the fact that It was the 25th anniversary of their wedding day, but their visitors had not. Af ter Mr. and Mrs. Meeker had realized that the surprise was for tbem and the oompany had been duly welcomed, some hours were passed very pleas antly. This' week a force of paper hangers have been at work; repapering the balls and rooms in the Becond story.
