Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. N. Bntler, and children left Monday morning for Spokane, Wash., where Mr. Brovn is now located. They were joined at Port land by Mr. B. O. W. DeCarlow was down from Trail last week. Mr. DeCarlow is doing quite a bit of timber locating in his locality these times. , He is a fair, honest locator and justly deserves the patronage be is receiving. . G. W. Starr anil family, of Dallas, -Oregon, are in Medford upon a two weeks' visit to Mr. Starr's father, Con larctor E. W. Starr and the elder Mr. Starr is taking a few days lay-off and is entertaining the visitors moet royally. Mrs. Joha Clrich and her daughter, Miss Luty, who have been visiting Cashier G. h. Llndley and family for the past month left Sunday foi their home in Godfrey, Illinois. These ladies are mother and sister respectively of Mrs. Llndley. Mrs. M. Walker returned to Medford last week from McOlond, Calif. She will remain in Medford with her laughter, Mra. H. 0. Mackey, for a few months, when she will take up her residence in Asdland, where ber son has employment. Rev. W. F. Shields returned last Saturday evening from attendance at the Geueral Assembly of the Fresbyte-! rian church, held at Los Angeles last h reports unviuu very pleasant trip and attended a very interesting and profitable assembly. The Mayor has not been feeling in his usual health for the past two weeks, and thought a short term on the river would put him in shape asaln. Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Morris were in Medford Wednesday for a few hours: Mr. Morris save that he expect there will be "something doing" in ditch mat ters in a short time. . At present there are 1,000 inches of water running in the ditch, and you "can't hardly notice It all". , . A. A. Davis returned Saturday from his eastern trip. While away Mr. Davis visited his old home in Indiana, and also visited other eastern points, there is no place like the Rogue Blver Valley, however, and A. A. was as tickled as a boy with bis first long pants to get back. J.O. Matthews left Wednesday for Roselawn, Calif., where he will be em ployed on a stock ranch for the summer. Mr. Matthews Is a good, sturdy Elk creek homesteader and spends the winters on his homestead Improving his land and makes this possible by earning money elsewhere during the summer. James M. Howard, of Brownsboro, made homestead proof before Commis sioner Bliton last Friday. His wit nesses were Carl J. Geer and Alvin Bteberstedt. A protest was filed on May 28th, by Wm. 8tanley. The ale- gations set forth In the protest are in ' substance that he (Stanley) has dis covered a ledee of cinnabar on the place. Miss Kate E. Anderson, together with five lady assistants, were at the Halley bouse several days last week and this and were distributing gratuitously pound cans of Boyal baking powder among the many housewives of our city. Miss Anderson is a sister of Wesley J. D. Anderson, of Climax, and on Sun day Mr. Anderson and family were In Medford paying the lady a visit. Mrs. J. H., Norris returned Sunday from a several days' visit with friends in Portland. She was accompanied to Portland by ber daughter, Miss Fern, who took part io a recital given last week in that city, and so creditably did she handle the difficult role .assigned her that the young lady was the recip ient of many comDllments. She will remain in Portland a few weeks and will take further instructions in music. A. Fradenburg and son, H. A. Frad- enbnrg, of Orting, Wash., and J. P. Brown, of North Yakima, Wash., who have been in the valley for a couple of weeks looking for a farm location, left Saturday for their respective homes but expect to return later. Miss Jennie Woodford left last week for a month's Visit with relatives at Portland. Miss Virgle Woodford, who has been at Conquille City (or the past year, will also return to Medford about the first of July and will join Misses Myrtle and Jennie at Boaeburg upon their return from Portland, Miss Virgle will resume work as typo In the Mail office. Attorney W. H. Parker returned Monday from Oakland, 'Calif., and will settle down once more among his Med ford frierids. W. H. Is of the opinion that there is no place like Southern Oregon, and that the longer you stay away the worse you want to get back. He will engage in the practice of law In Medford, having formed a partnership with Attorney C. P. Snell. Mr. Park er is a gentleman well read in law and his friends will be pleased to know that he Is again to do business among them. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Boweu arrived in .. Medford, Tuesday , evening from San Fernando, Mexico. Mr. Bowon is a master-mechanic, and for the past Week year has been superintendent of the Calumet-Henla mine, at San Fernando, Ho is now seeking a looation in a more equable climate than either the East, where he spent many years, con nccted with large machine work, or in the South, and ttiinks, he has found about what he wants here, if he ca-i find an ouening in his line. Mrs Bowen is a sister of Mrs. W. L. Cam eron, and they are guests of Dr, and Mrs. Cameron. B. F. Nail, of Lincoln county Washington, arrived in Medford the latter part of last week. Mr. Nail owns one of the finest wheat farms In the Big Bend country aud is well-to-do so far as this world'sgoods go. He has recently disposed of other property ho had in Washington and will, in all probability, Invest a good sum of monoy in Bogue River Valley land. Howavor, he Is going to stay hero the remainder of the summer aud lootc around and visit with his old-time Washington friend, F. E. Payne, the gentleman who is ttgurlnz on all kinds of success for his young apple and pear orchard. Earl Van Antwerp arrived in Med ford last week from Butte, Montana, where, for the past four months, he has been subscription solicitor for the San Francisco Examiner. His homecomlne at this time was on account of bis mother's illness, the good lady having been In very poor health for a few weeks past. Earl will remain In Med ford until about the first of July when he will go to San Francisco for in structions as to bis farther work from the Examiner. His success as a canvas ser waa very satisfactory to the pub lisher of the Examiner and to himself, and it Is not Improbable that be will re turn to his old field in Montana. Mr. Van Antwerp began bis work as a sub scription solicitor for The Mail over four years ago he succeeded in his work there and he has been a success at whatever vocation be has taken up since that time and all his old-time friends are pleased thereat. If his mother's health is not better by the first of July she will go to Portland to reside. ' City Council Proceedings The city council met in regular ses sion on Tuesday evening. Present: Conncilmen Wilson, Humason, Van Dyke and El wood, absent: Mayor Crowell, Conncilmen Willeke, Pickel. In the absence of the Mayor, Coun cilman Wilson presided. A license to sell liquor for six months from June Hth was granted Young & Hall. The petition of Mrs. Phipps and others te make repairs on the flume of the waste water ditch was referred to committee on streets, light nnd water. A resolution requiring the building of a aide walk on J street from the M. E. churoh south to 4th street nnd tbence west on the north side of -1 li street to the property of Mrs. Elizabeth Wiggins was adopted. A motion that no rebate on license be allowed the Quaker doctor for' time In which they claimed to be unable to do business was carried, and chief of police ordered to collect full amount. An ordinance wus passed regulating baseball and other sports on Sunday, and wll go into effect after approval by the Mayor. The. ordinance .. provides that no baseball games shall take place Ithln the city limits on Sunday, unless the grounds are enclosed by a fence at least seven leet nlgn, and provides a fine of 125 for violation thereof. Bills aggregating the following amounts on different funds ware audit ed j General Fund, 1209.76; Light and Water Funds, 213.04; Street and Road Fund, $562.11.
