A great many persons Hatter them selves Mint they nre utile to tell a gon trine Persian rug from a spurious nm cbioe made one by touch, but In this Mioy deceive themselves. The best umi surest way to tell a genuine from an Bultatlon Persian rug Is the following If one will look closely, one will ob serve that In the genulue Persian rug the intricate and complicated pattern or design is not altogether symmetric al, the corresiiouding flowers, vines or sTometrlcal figures of one side being little out of uuo, larger or smaller er not meeting and pointing with tic- ires on tho corresponding detail on the apposite side of the rug. This Is owing to the fact that In band weaving it Is Impossible to obtain perfect symmetry of patterns, especially wheu the tie ' signs are as complicated as they are on Persian rugs. On the other hand, fct one examine closely the machlue . nade rug. and one will find the most perfect symmetry of pattern, so much o. in fact that the design looks posi tively rigid and hursh. This a pretty Jifo guide, and If observed one will seldom mistake an imitation for a gen wfne Persian rug. CultlTatlnfr. Glnirer. Ginger is made a matter of scientific oIture In Jamaica. Mexican Child Life. - lieiiean children high and low are exceedingly fortunate In being treated almost uniformly with the greatest kindness and affection by their par ants. Address br. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo, N. Y. : 1" mMM DOMINATED BY WOMEN. A Welsh Tama Where the Femlnln Sex ltela-ua Supreme. Awny In n sequestered llttlo nook on the Pembrokeshire coast there Is a vil lage entirely mnmiucd by women, lu Langum for such Is the hamlet's name woman reigns supreme. She is the dominating foreo of tho mart of trade tho household financier, tho family ac countant, and, In fact, tills all tho po sitions which In any other community, whether civilised or not, are by estab lished precedent voted to man. Langum has a race apart from tho world In Its laws In Its exclusion of tho stranger and in its utter disregard of tho vast area of world ami things lying beyond Us borders. Its quiet life Is dominated by two all powerful factors womauklnd and oysters. There nro men in Ijiniun, but they exert little or no influcuce upon the affairs of the quiet llttlo Welsh village. The Langum man neither is nor pre tends to bo. Ho recognizes tho right of womankind to owu and rule and is per fectly satisfied to be described as An nie Jones' man or Mary Williams' man. He neither requires nor appreciates compassion. Sitting of an evening nt his cottage door, with his faithful brood playing around him, his wife and daughter busy within reckoning the gains of tho day's work, he Is vexed by no mental anxieties or perplexities. Divested of all responsibilities of life, he is as pleased as tho oyster for which his nntivo place is famed. London An swers. The Short Step Between. "I was ou an ocean liner wheu she ran on the rocks off the English const some yenrs ago," said a Philadelphia traveling man, "nnd In the pnnlc that ensued there Is one incident that stands out In my memory, Illustrating tho slenderMbrend between the tragic and the ridiculous; Wo had a fellow on board who had managed to keep pretty well loaded all tho way across, and when we struck the rocks he was in his usunl condition. When everybody thouglit for sure we were going to the botti-ai, he sat down nt the piano in the saloon, nnd what do you suppose he began playing? 'Home, Sweet Uomc.' Somebody went to him and begged blni to stop.- Immediately he switched off from the doleful strains of the old song to the rollicking melody of 'Down Went McGinty.' The absurdity of the thing seemed to strike everybody at once, and a general laugh followed. The tension was relieved, and there was good order after that." Philadel phia Record. Aotltl jappala Diet. "Dyspepsia would no lonjjer be the national disease lu America If the peo ple of this country would adopt a plain diet similar to that of Norway and Sweden. Gout is unknown among Swedes and Sorwcgiaus, and the rosy checks and clear complexions of tho young people of those countries arc the result of the simple food the chil dren eat," the United States consul at Bergen, Norway, says. "Hot rolls and white bread are. rarely seen in Sweden. Knaekbrode or hnrd bread Is the stand ard article of . food. It Is made of ground oats and rye. There Is no yeast In the bread, and it Is rolled into thin wafers, which are baked and hung up where they will keep perfectly dry. Swedes eat this bread and drink milk for two meals a day and have one meal at which they cat meat and potatoes. Sweets arc almost unknown. Children are allowed to eat candy only ou state occasions." Why She Wanted an Tutrodnetlon. "I must hare an Introduction to that woman." "Why, yes; certainly," replied her friend, and at oucu brought It about Later she asked: "AVlmt made you so keen about meet ing Mrs. S ? I Just had to find out how it was made. 1 know how to make one exactly like It now. .lust let me clap my eyes on anything of that sort for n few minutes and I'll reproduce It so that you never could tell the copy from the original." New York Press. The flnmnn Heart. The heart of man Is a book liny, it is an eiiclycopedia of everything Hint has ever como within the range of Its personal experience. It preserves mi eternal record of all the stories in which It has played a part. It Is strange what sad things may be hidden lu Its depth without giving any loken of their existence. The heart may be gay and may send the smile mantling to the face, but all the while you see only the topmost stratum. If the graves beneath were to give up their dead, the smiles would seem strangely out of place. Steel Skyacrniiera.
